4 TPS This is a picture of Cleopatra’s Needle, an ancient Egyptian statue in Central Park in a New York City. The statue has suffered more erosion in the past 100 years than it did in the previous 3,000. Why???

5 Cleopatra’s Needle The needle is becoming eroded by acid rain. acid rain is rainwater with a high concentration of acids.

6 Acid Rain pH is used to measure the acidity of a substance. Pure water has a pH of 7. As pH decreases, it becomes increasingly acidic.

7 Effect on Ecosystems Acid rain can cause the soil to become acidic, harming any plants that absorb nutrients from the soil.

8 More Effects Acid rain that falls on aquatic ecosystems can change the pH of the water, killing organisms.

9 POP QUIZ You have 10 minutes to look over your notes from this week (everything about air pollution). When 10 minutes are up, put everything away and we will take a pop quiz.
