4. TPS This is a picture of Cleopatra’s Needle, an ancient Egyptian statue in Central Park in a New York City. The statue has suffered more erosion in the past 100 years than it did in the previous 3,000. Why???

5. Cleopatra’s Needle The needle is becoming eroded by acid rain. acid rain is rainwater with a high concentration of acids.

6. Acid Rain pH is used to measure the acidity of a substance. Pure water has a pH of 7. As pH decreases, it becomes increasingly acidic.

7. Effect on Ecosystems Acid rain can cause the soil to become acidic, harming any plants that absorb nutrients from the soil.

8. More Effects Acid rain that falls on aquatic ecosystems can change the pH of the water, killing organisms.
