4 Indian River Middle School It Really Means Success We are “accepting of all students” when we: Follow the IRCSD Code of Conduct Use the Student Handbook Treat each other with Dignity and Respect Communicate effectively

5 Indian River Middle School It Really Means Success Your Rights & Responsibilities Student Responsibilities Maintain mutual respect and dignity for all students and staff An IRC student has the right to participate in all district activities on an equal basis regardless of: Race Color Weight National origin Ethnic group Religion Gender Sex Disability Sexual orientation Religious practice Any other legally protected status

6 Indian River Middle School It Really Means Success What is DASA? The “Dignity for All Students Act” is a New York State law that was implemented in 2012. It is designed to provide a learning environment free of discrimination, harassment and bullying. In the 2013-2014 school year, DASA included cyber bullying and the use of electronic communication that may disrupt the learning environment. DASA works to help prevent discrimination, harassment and bullying through civility, citizenship and character education.

7 Indian River Middle School It Really Means Success Harassment & Discrimination Harassment happens when: School environment becomes hostile, or unsafe Mental, physical or emotional stress Interferes with education, or learning Examples of Harassment: Verbal Threats Abuse Teasing Discrimination is being treated differently: based on a certain group or category by being ‘perceived’ to belong to a group Discrimination occurs when: rights or privileges of the person are denied there is unfair treatment
