Discrimination Maria Gleixner Pd. CD

Discrimination Dis-crim-i-na-tion noun 1.an act or instance of discrimination. 2. treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination.

Racism rey-siz-uh-m noun 1.the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others 2. 2. abusive or aggressive behavior towards members of another race on the basis of such a belief

Mark Twain’s View on Racism “I have no color prejudices nor caste prejudices nor creed prejudices. All I care to know is that a man is a human being, and that is enough for me; he can’t be any worse.”

“His ignorance covered the whole earth like a blanket, and there was hardly a hole in it anywhere.”

Racism in Hannibal, Missouri Hannibal, Missouri, the hometown of Mark Twain, influenced him in many ways.

Missouri was a slave state, and, though the young Clemens had been reassured that chattel slavery was an institution approved by God, he nevertheless carried with him memories of cruelty and sadness that he would reflect upon in his maturity.

Racism in the 1880s By the early 1880s, Reconstruction, the plan to put the United States back together after the war and integrate freed slaves into society, had hit shaky ground, although it had not yet failed outright.

As Twain worked on his novel, race relations, which seemed to be on a positive path in the years following the Civil War, once again became strained.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn One of Twain’s greatest works. The book caused a lot of controversy because of its content.

Due to its southern dialect the book was banned in some places or revised and altered with.

Racism Within the Book “ It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go humble myself to a nigger– but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.”

“ I never seen such a nigger. If he got a notion in his head once, there warn’t no getting it out again. He was the most down on Solomon of any nigger I ever see.”

"And to see the cool way of that nigger— why, he wouldn't a give me the road if I hadn't shoved him out o' the way. I says to the people, why ain't this nigger put up at auction and sold?—that's what I want to know. And what do you reckon they said? Why, they said he couldn't be sold till he'd been in the State six months, and he hadn't been there that long yet. There, now—that's a specimen. They call that a govment that can't sell a free nigger till he's been in the state six months…”

Racism Today in the World Today believe it or not, racism is a growing thing in lots of countries.

Racism Today in World The most common types of racism are prejudice, racial assumptions, racial jokes and slurs, discrimination, harassment, institutional, and micro-inequities.

Discrimination in the World In today’s world there are still many forms of discrimination. Such as religious, sexual preference, age, and gender.
