2 EOGEO September 15, 2003Overview 2Background WGISS 15 - Toulouse –Allan Doyle suggested it might be useful to have a non-profit organization to handle some of the needs of NGOs like the UN Summer 2003 –Allan Doyle, Clive Best, & Lorant Czaran discussed this, then included Mick Wilson & others in the discussion –Also Dirk-Willem van Gulik & Zac (Zavisa Bjelogrlic) August 15, 2003 –EOGEO Ltd. formed as a non-profit corporation

3 EOGEO September 15, 2003Overview 3Mission EOGEO provides rapid access to Earth observation and geospatial data and provides information technology tools, goods, and services to public charities, aid agencies, educational institutions and academia, government organizations, Non Governmental Organizations (NGO's), and the general public via the internet, electronic media, and other means.

4 EOGEO September 15, 2003Overview 4Activities 1. Develop and maintain technology to provide access to such data, tools, goods, and services, 2. Perform other related research and experimentation in, and implementation and dissemination of, related technologies in the public interest, 3. Engage in educational activities related to the Corporation's activities, and 4. Coordinate and cooperate with other entities engaged in activities of a similar or complementary nature.

5 EOGEO September 15, 2003Overview 5 Program areas Focus on technology and services that foster and empower decentralized interoperating communities, with particular emphasis on developing countries with limited communications bandwidth and small operating budgets. Assist in the development and operation of services and technologies needed to carry out our primary mission by collaborating with developers of free and open source software. Maintain long-term relationships with our partners, beneficiaries, and supporters to ensure development of relevant tools and services that are appropriate for their missions.

6 EOGEO September 15, 2003Overview 6 Initial Activities (1) Spatial Portal for NGOs –Provide accurate up to date information on all world countries. An aggregation of sources including maps, background data, news, intelligence, conflict risks, video clips, comments –Provide links to resources like GCMD –Provide collaboration area - wikis, blogs, etc. where NGO people can talk about data, services, tools. (Next few slides are examples of Clive’s EMM system at work)

Response –Adapt existing open source tools to develop decentralized data & metadata hosting tools. –Adapt RSS feeds, weblogs (datalogs), peer-to- peer ideas to aggregate metadata, distribute data, provide replication. –Initial NGO UN/UNEP (under discussion)
