1 A B Lesson Essential Question:
BELLRINGER: The mass of an object is 30 grams. The volume of an object is 5 cm3. What is the object’s density? If you aren’t wearing a backpack, why do your shoulders still have pressure on them? Why won’t air pressure crush us? A B Lesson Essential Question: What are the effects of each property of air? 1

2 Today's Activities: Go over bellringer Take notes on barometers Build a mercury barometer Take notes on altitude, air pressure, and density.

3 What tool is used to measure air pressure?
BAROMETER!!!!! 2 types: Mercury Aneroid

4 Barometers Mercury Barometer: instrument that measures air pressure using liquid mercury.

5 Draw a line on the glass tube to show where the level of mercury would go if AIR PRESSURE FELL.
Draw a line on the glass tube to show where the level of mercury would go if AIR PRESSURE ROSE.

6 Barometers Aneroid Barometer: instrument that measures air pressure without using a liquid.

7 Science Challenge Question

8 Science Challenge Question

9 The distance above sea level.
Altitude The distance above sea level.

10 Altitude Affects Air Pressure

11 Altitude Affects Air Pressure
Imagine a stack of books, which book has more pressure on it, the top or bottom one? Air near the top of the atmosphere is like the top book, the air has less weight pressing on it and has a lower air pressure. Air at sea level is like the bottom book, it has high pressure.

12 Air pressure decreases as altitude increases.

13

14 Altitude Affects Density
Altitude and Air Density: The density of air decreases as altitude increases.
