Pilot and Proposal for a European Remote Access Network David Schiller (IAB) Data without Boundaries (DwB) - WP4 workshop before NTTS Brussels, 4. March 2013

The Pilot Partners:  CASD, France  SD-Box, institution, international access  IAB, Germany  Thin client, safe centre, international access  SDS, UK  Regular PC, institution, national access 4 March 2013 Workshop before NTTS 20132

The Pilot Aim:  In general  Tests for a fully developed solution  Proof of concept  In fact  Connections between all three partners  UK data in Germany and France  German data in UK and France  French data in UK and Germany 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20133

Proposal for a European Remote Access Network (Eu-RAN) Based on the findings of the two surveys (RA solutions and researcher needs). WP4 deliverable 4.2: “Feasibility study on the organisational architecture for managing pan European access”. A first concept to get the general idea. No detailed descripton. Concept should be intensively discussed with experts from different areas (e.g. during this workshop). 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20134

European Remote Access Network (Eu-RAN) 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20135 Single point of access User account management (Customized) Interfaces to data providers Safe Centre InstitutionAnywhere Data provider A secure connections Data provider B Data provider C secure connections Access points Data storage

Virtual Research Environment (VRE) 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20136 Single point of access User account management (Customized) Interfaces to data providers Safe Centre InstitutionAnywhere Data provider A secure connections Data provider B Data provider C secure connections Access points Data storage Virtual research/working environment

Virtual Research Environment (VRE) Main aims of the VRE: 1.Provide a workspace that is close to the private one 2.Enable communication for projects with partners in different locations 3.Enable communication with other researchers 4.Enable exchange of knowledge (e.g. program code) 5.Provide an environment where researchers can life 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20137

Microdata Computation Centre (MiCoCe) 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20138 Single point of access User account management (Customized) Interfaces to data providers Safe Centre InstitutionAnywhere Data provider A secure connections Data provider B Data provider C secure connections Access points Data storage Virtual working environment Microdata Computation Centre (MiCoCe)

Main aims of MiCoCe:  Storage space and computation power for microdata  Trustable and secure environment Three key functionalities of MiCoCe: 1.Storage and computation facility for new data providers (long-term solution) 2.Storage and computation facility for project duration (medium-term solution) 3.Only computation facility for “computation on the fly” (short-term solution) 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 20139

Conclusion The Eu-RAN can harmonize and ease access to confidential microdata in Europe. The VRE supports transnational research projects and communication within the scientific community The MiCoCe offers a central infrastructure for new data providers and supports research with data from different sources All together a future proofed infrastructure for European research could be established. 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 201310

Outlook Feasibility study will be available soon at www.dwbproject.org. An updated version will provide requirements to discuss and solve technical and organisational issues. The pilot within DwB will deliver a limited network solution. DwB provides a intensively discussed concept and useful requirement analysis for an improvement of access to European microdata. In the next step partners to build a fully developed European Remote Access Network with all components are needed. 4 March 2013Workshop before NTTS 201311
