2 Smart Start: DESTINY What does this term mean? Do you have a destiny? Is one’s destiny chosen for them or do they create one on their own? What factors can influence ones destiny? What factors have influenced your own destiny?

4 Directions to handout As you watch the first episode: “To Destiny” you will need to fill in notes/information from the video that YOU believe will lead to Napoleon’s destiny. At the bottom is the essential question: What was Napoleon’s true destiny? On the back side you will then answer this question based on what you learned in the video and took notes on. There are some guiding questions as well to help you respond.

12 Expand France’s border At War with Russia, Austria, Great Britain. Make them pay for attacking France at her weakest time Alliances were formed by all European countries trying to fight against France- Good or bad? Look at Map: page 349 Spread idea of Nationalism to these Countries

13 Europe Endures Great Britain much more stronger and in the long run he could never invade it Each country in Europe started to gain Nationalistic feelings of “I am better than you are” Russia: Like Great Britain was unattainable. Napoleon tries to invade and loses big time 750,000 troops entered Russia: 15,000 and less came back Defeat at Waterloo last straw

14 What happens next? Napoleon exiled to St. Helena island France is hated by all of Europe European powers now arise and want to make sure that another Napoleon rises to power Militarism, Nationalism, and Alliances start to corrupt Europe Ideas of modernization do spread (new technology, life, and society emerges)
