2 Internet History ARPANet Research project 1969 – 4 computers US Dept. of Defense and Rand Corporation Goal was to send messages between computers without any one computer being in charge

3 TCP / IP TCP: Transmission Control Protocol Divides messages into packets Packets may take different routes through the network Reassembles packets at the destination

4 TCP / IP IP: Internet Protocol Handles addressing Gives each packet a label with destination address Routes packets to multiple computers

5 Internet History Tim Berners-Lee 1990 – created World Wide Web Visualized a spider’s web made of links Text link – hypertext Icon or image link – hyperregion

6 Internet History Marc Andreessen 1993 – designed Mosaic, first graphical browser Attractive images and graphical interface Netscape – produced by a company founded by Andreessen

7 Internet Explosion Factors 1.TCP/IP standard 2.Ability to link from site to site 3.Ease of use with graphical browser 4.Growth of PCs and LANs

8 Internet Connection Computer with modem or Network card Internet Service Provider (ISP) Online Service Browser

9 Using the World Wide Web Hyperlink connection to another page or document on the web Easy movement between documents Usually easy to recognize

10 Using the World Wide Web Home page – the first page of a web site URL – uniform resource locator Unique address of a Web page http: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Domain name

11 Using the World Wide Web Top Level Domains (Within the U.S.).com – business site.edu – education.mil – military.gov – government.net – business.org – non-profit organizations Country domains use 2-letter abbreviations Ex: mx for Mexico, ca for Canada

12 Browser Features Frames Rectangular sections Can operate separately May look cluttered Hot List also called “bookmarks” or “favorites” List of favorite sites and their URLs

13 Browser Extras Plug-ins Software that adds capabilities to your browser Examples: Adobe Acrobat – used to view.pdf files Shockwave – view complex animation Media Player – play video or listen to audio

14 Browser Extras Java: general purpose programming language Applets – programs written in Java and included in web pages. Applets can play games, display animation, perform calculations, virtually anything you want to do.

15 Internet Search Search engine Software that searchs parts of the web Results vary by search engine Metasearch Uses several search engines Directory Yahoo: humans review web sites and organize them by content

16 Non-Web Parts of the Internet FTP: file transfer protocol Download files to your computer Upload files to another computer Telnet: log in to a remote computer Email: read / send / organize messages

17 Internet Problems Netiquette – appropriate behavior in network communications..email, chat rooms, etc. Decency Act of 1996 – an attempt to censor material on the WWW. Later declared unconstitutional.
