Eduworks 2 Objectives Provide –Perspective on architectures for e-learning –Integration requirements with campus and e-learning products –Broader view of product space –Details and directions of interoperability standards (OKI, SCORM, IMS, IEEE) Work with RFP committee on ensure completeness and accuracy Identify all viable alternatives

Eduworks 3 Activities Interviewed a range of personnel from various campuses –Faculty, Executive, IT, Administrative E-learning functional architecture paper Presentation to task force Work with task force on RFP –Tuesday all day review and revision –Input on final version

Eduworks 4 Operational Requirements UW is operationally dependent on Course Management System functionality RFP covers these operational areas very well, for example: Online Grade Book Describe in detail your online grade book and its ability to: –calculate weighted grades, percentages, total points, and letter grades –import and export grades to and from spreadsheets –allow for easy modification of auto-graded items –allow for assignment of partial credits –allow students to view their grades and to compare their grades to those of the rest of the class –Integrate with Student Administration grading functions Does your software have the ability to integrate with third-party grade book software?

Eduworks 5 Why Do More Now? Establish an architecture for the future Support wider adoption, and keep it easy –Easy to start, easy to use, 'one size fits all' –Vast majority still not using any kind of online software Support online leaders –As they progress it's 'one size gives all fits‘ – true of both products –Deeper functionality needed – but areas vary by department –Integrate pilot projects –Blackboard and WebCT both inadequate in many areas for this group ‘Future proof’ content –Reuse content across courses –Support migration across platforms – or eliminate the need to migrate –Content in the systems will expand –Move towards library integration –Include large variety of content – e.g. research and simulations

Eduworks 6 Positioning for now and for the future … RFP: clearly outlines current position speaks to existing vendors invites responses from a range of sources identifies long term needs covers existing functional requirements

Eduworks 13 Decisions and Issues Viable decisions supported by the RFP process: –STATUS QUO – keep both for now, and wait –WWF.EDU – Blackboard versus WebCT, the battle –DARK HORSE – a better solution, for now and later Issues –Is this the right time to choose or switch? –CMS vendors have proprietary architectures (for a reason) –Financial instability of CMS vendors – rumors abound, we need real information

Eduworks 14 Observations Costs are going to go up –Regardless of the option you choose –Quality content is important and not cheap –If UW really wants to make use of the technology - invest The application is mission-critical –Need industrial strength systems and services

Eduworks 15 Conclusions Go ahead with the RFP –There will be respondents other than the current vendors (5 to 7) –Committee has done a good job with a tough problem in balancing long and short term needs –Could have significant impact in the higher ed space –Supports a number of options You may not find viable alternatives yet, but … –It is time to start looking, and influencing the market –Encourage the competition and define the expectations A decision needs to be made
