3 Primary Economic Activities
An economic activity that relies directly upon natural resources. Examples: Fishing Mining Farming Ranching

4 Secondary Economic Activities
An economic activity in which people use raw materials to produce or manufacture new products of greater value. Examples: Turning wheat into flour Milling lumber into plywood Making fish into packaged fish sticks Turning gold into a bracelet

5 Tertiary Economic Activities
Economic Activity where people are engaged in the service industry. Examples: Lawyers Doctors Waitresses Firefighters Mechanics

6 Quaternary Economic Activities
Economic Activities that focuses on getting, processing and sharing information. Examples: Education Researchers Government workers CEO’s Technology creators

7 Economic Activities: Assignment
Directions: There are 6 advertisements in your folder. Choose FOUR and complete the charts on your handout. You may have to be creative, but logical, when completing ‘quaternary’. Primary The gold was mined in South Africa. Secondary The gold is sent to a factory, melted down and made into a bracelet. Tertiary The gold bracelet was bought by Kay Jewelers and sold to the public. Quaternary The CEO of Kay Jewelers researches new ways to mine gold with less devastation on the environment.

8 NAFTA: Tariff - A tax or duty to be paid on a particular class of imports or exports NAFTA - As of January 1, 2008, all tariffs and quotas were eliminated on U.S. exports to Mexico and Canada under the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA - created the world’s largest free trade area, and led to economic growth and rising prosperity in all three countries.
