Students will investigate the life cycles of different living things. c. Investigate the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed and by recording changes over a period of time.

5. The six parts of a plant: 1.ROOTS A root is a plant structure that gets food and water from the soil, stores energy, and provides support for the plant. Most roots grow underground.

6. The six parts of a plant: 2. Seed Every seed is a tiny plant with leaves, stems, and root parts waiting for the right things to happen to make it germinate and grow. Seeds are protected by a coat. This coat can be thin or thick and hard.

8. The six parts of a plant: 4. Leaves Leaves are the food making factories of green plants. Leaves come in many different shapes and sizes.

10. The six parts of a plant: 6. Fruit The fruit is the ripened ovary of a plant containing the seeds. Many things we call vegetables are really fruits (tomato, cucumber, beans).

17. Ok…Now that we know about the parts of a plant, what a plant needs to survive, and the plant life cycle, we are ready to dive into growing plants of our own. but first….

19. Give the storyteller a round of applause! Now it is our turn! With all our knowledge of the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to survive, we are going to grow our own plant!

20. Beanstalk Project! You will need: 1. Styrofoam cups 2. dirt, potting soil, etc. 3. 3-4 Bean seeds 4. water 5. Chart Directions: Fill the cup with soil about half way. Plant the seeds. Cover with soil until the cups are about three-quarters full. Water and place each plant in an area with direct sunlight. Every other day observe your beanstalks and draw a picture. Some days may have no change. That is OK. Record it anyway. When your beans begin to grow, measure them and record your results in your graph.

21. PLANT OBSERVATION CHART Every 2-3 days check your bean seed and fill in the following blanks. Date Did your plant get Sunlight? Did your plant get Water? What is the height of your plant today? Other Observations? This is what your chart will look like:

22. What will we do with our data? At the end of our project, I will ask everyone how tall your plant was after 14 days, and we will graph that information. Here is an example of what our graph might look like:
