3 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. What are the Characteristics of the Process? Data Collection & Analysis –Study Group/Meeting Records –KWLs –Charts for Identifying Error Patterns (reading, writing and math) Identify Errors & Use Samples of Student Work to Monitor Progress –Informal assessment –Formative assessment –District-wide and/or school-wide assessments (performance assessments) –ISTEP+ (Student Applied Skills Test Booklets & Teachers Scoring Guide) Grade Level/Team Collaboration (weekly) to monitor implementation and impact –Facilitated –Focused –Outcomes

4 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. How does the Process Work? Identify errors (reading, writing, math) Match strategies to errors (research based) Implement across the curriculum with consistency, frequency, and integrity (breadth and depth) Monitor for level of implementation of strategies (meeting records, KWLs, and student level of use (work samples) Adjust and inform (classroom instruction, intervention, professional development)

5 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. What are the Benefits? All staff know how to analyze and use data (focusing on errors using performance assessments and student work samples) to –inform whole group instruction, –provide intervention for students in the classroom using small flexible groups, –provide supplemental intervention for at-risk students, and –provide support (professional development) for teachers. All staff use data to clarify how to model strategies explicitly for impact. Strategies matched to critical errors provides a common focus across the curriculum reinforcing students’ ability to use the strategies when processing challenging information independently. Ongoing monitoring of implementation and impact data supports horizontal and vertical articulation of curriculum, instruction, and assessments to ensure student impact.

6 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. Professional Development - Interventions Workshop #1 (September) Conduct kickoff workshop to identify common errors/solutions across schools Overview and purpose Introduction to the KWL Analysis –What we Know –What we Want to Know –What we have Learned Practice using the KWL worksheets Introduction to the Study Group/Meeting Record Form Review of research-based articles and publications Review Learning Model Across the Curriculum and definitions Review sample classroom chart for key errors/grouping by skill area

7 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. Professional Development - Interventions Workshop #2 (November) –Overview and purpose –Debrief what you’ve learned from District end-of-year assessments (when available) Last year’s ISTEP+ reports –Analyzing and using results from assessments –Using ISTEP+ student response booklets to identify key errors –Next steps

8 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. Professional Development - Interventions Workshop #3 (February) Agenda Overview and purpose Debrief what you’ve learned from –Performance assessments (when available) –Student work samples Using KWLs and Error Charts to analyze Fall ISTEP+ data: –Disaggregation Summary Report –Applied Skills Frequency Distribution –ISTEP+ student response booklets to identify key errors Next Steps

9 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. Professional Development - Interventions Learn how to analyze ISTEP+ data to extract meaning and provide focus for improvement –Identify skill indicators with high non-mastery –Identify ranges among skill indicators Teachers must have common time by grade level to meet together –Facilitated –Focused –Based on student performance data and work samples (not student work sheets or practice sheets) such as –Multiple choice, True/False, or Fill in the blank

10 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. School Visits KJ Learning will visit each participating school four times during the current school year –Meet with grade-level teachers to determine Student errors the teachers have identified Causes of those student errors Strategies for students to correct those errors –Work with teachers to refine and improve the process –Determine next steps and assignments in preparation for the next visit

11 © KJ Learning Partners, Inc. Measures of Success Report submitted to the school principal and school corporation superintendent by KJ Learning –Evidence of learning –Evidence of effecting deployment of the process Work samples, KWL sheets, etc. –Results data –Implementation issues and corrective action required
