2 Review DMA educational taskforce – 11/05 –Recommended pilot study to evaluate the use of an Online RD Preceptor Distance approach to education –Approved by DMA BOD 7/06 –UND agreed to become the pilot project –Initial DMA Teleseminar – 11/16/06

3 Steps to Initiation of Pilot Program Identify learning objectives and outcomes Determine if these can be met using an Online RD Preceptor. Identity an RD Preceptor willing to accept this challenge Gain approval from DMA for proposal Market the program

4 Marketing Word of mouth –UND –DMA DMA website Classified ad in DMA magazine Eventually part of display ad in DMA magazine Eventually part of brochure distributed by UND

5 Additional Opportunities for Learning Learning experiences previously listed as optional, or to discuss with preceptor now mandatory. Additional case studies assigned as determined by UND Online RD Preceptor Extensive communication (online and email) between Online RD Preceptor and student

6 RD Preceptor Familiar with UND course Extensive experience in variety of professional settings Experience as a consultant RD Wide focus area Experience with developing and utilizing online teaching techniques Interested in challenges!!!

7 Potential Students Foodservice companies Sales Schools Limited access to RD RD is already overcommitted in the facility Lack of support from administrator to add additional responsibilities to RDs role

8 Cost Flat fee Payment is required upfront Cost of Online RD Preceptor is very reasonable, less costly than the 50 hours required as a consultants fee

9 Advantages Students previously denied access now enrolled –more contributing members in our profession Increase in numbers of DMA members

10 What are the results? National Credentialing exam pass rate = 100%. (1 candidate) Average length of time to complete remains 15 – 18 months, although highly motivated students can complete in ~ 6 months. 11/06 = 14 enrollments 7/07 = 69 enrollments 3/08 = 130 enrollments

11 UND Online RD Preceptors Started with one Online RD Preceptor –Consistency –Close proximity –Excellent track record When enrollments increased beyond capacity, added an additional Online RD Preceptor

12 Comments from UND Online RD Preceptors Students progress as well or better than typical distance students As with all distance education, motivation is a concern UND Online RD Preceptors wonder if they are doing enough They have enjoyed the challenge
