WGISS Way Forward on GEO Actions Pakorn Apaphant October 2, 2009 WGISS 28 Pretoria, South Africa

Recall: Guidance to subgroups Provide WGISS Plenary with Progress/Update for all CEOS/GEO Actions Anticipated Demonstration at CEOS Plenary and GEO-VI Plan for 2010 WGISS/GEO Activities - List of the GEO Tasks WGISS will support with some description, leader and expected deliverables

3 AR-09-02a_30: Virtual Constellations Identify requirements and implement a prototype AC portal for evaluation and eventual use by the ACC, GEOSS and other AC user communities POC:Stefan Falke/NASA Planned Deliverables 15 Sep 09: AC portal prototype. 18 Nov 09: GEO-6 demo of prototype 31 Dec 09: Plans for portal governance / maintenance Current StatusDemo for Initial Capability at WGISS 28 including, interoperability of data and services among DLR, Giovanni, and DataFed Way ForwardDemonstration and/or Presentation at CEOS plenary, GEO-VI and an air quality side meeting

4 AR-09-02c_2: Flood Sensor Web Emergency Response Prototype Identify scenarios and implement a prototype flood sensor web emergency response prototype for evaluation and eventual use by the IFRC and GEOSS. POC:Terrence Van Zyl/CSIR Planned Deliverables Sensor Web for Namibian Flood and Malaria, lead by Dan Mandl/NASA, working in conjunction with the Health SBA and looking at the use case relating the applicability of sensor web technologies to the tracking of vector borne diseases, there relationship to environmental factors and the integration of remote sensed data from CEOS and In-Situ data sources. Caribbean Flood Sensor Web, lead by Stu Fry/NASA, working in conjunction with the Disaster SBA under the AIP-2 and looking at the use case relating the applicability of sensor web technologies as a mechanism for integration of remote sensed and In-Situ data and as a valuable tool in providing near-real time data Current StatusMoving forward both activities are still active Way Forward Look to produce a video for the upcoming GEO Plenary to show the value of the activities undertaken (Disaster SBA VDO)

5 DA-09-01b_2: Data, Metadata, and Products Harmonization Establish a WGISS project to focus its contributions to the subject task and to generate those contributions. The first deliverable of the GEO task is an Assessment of Current Capabilities POC:Ken Mc Donald/NOAA Planned Deliverables: June 2009: Develop assignments for assessments Sept. 2009: Complete draft inputs to Assessment Report Current Status - Initial assessment of current GCI registries (Discovery and search) completed - Also undertaking additional steps 1) Development of a domain model consistent with GCI ConOps 2) Relevant standards/guidelines and metadata requirements for discovery, search and access 3) Exploring clearinghouse requirements for remote sensing data products with distributed search capabilities Way ForwardWGISS to Host the GEO workshop on Data Integration and Analysis Systems in Washington on Nov. 11-12 -WGISS will work with VC and SBA on developing portal based on CWIC experience -WGISS team to work with CEO to report to GEO ADC and share ADC meeting highlight with WGSS

6 DA-09-03d_3: Global DEM Update ICEDS information server to provide OGC-compliant access to ASTER 30m DEM data (when it becomes available), together with localized validation DEM data and associated quality information (e.g. gap locations; number of ASTER observations per pixel, etc.) POC:JP Muller (Wyn Culip for WGISS) Planned Deliverables: Update ICEDS information server to provide OGC-compliant WMS server for ASTER 30m DEM data, together with localized validation DEM data and associated quality information Current Status-Joint WGCV/WGISS Project plan is under development. Commitments are dependant on the securing of a funding. Way Forward- a project plan on DEM Quality Project to be presented at WGISS 29

7 DI-06-09_7: Use of Satellite for Risk Management Analyze the response by WGISS members to supply near real-time data to the response agency. Develop a working process model to integrate and make use of existing technologies within WGISS/CEOS. Implement a prototype to demonstrate use of these integrated technologies for the process model for the earthquake scenario. POC:Lorant Czaran/Pakorn Apaphant Planned Deliverables: June 30, 2009 –Testing the model September 30, 2009 – Working Process defined at WGISS 28 November 2009 –Document and include in WGISS Report at the CEOS plenary Current Status: - Project plan is being revised. - Lessons Learned for Disaster Response Management and a process of using technologies for Disaster Response Management is being drafted Way ForwardOct 30 Team meeting at UNSpider Workshop to conclude about project plan Nov 4-5 CEOS Plenary -coordination side meeting with Disaster SBA Lead Dec 1 -Propose the plan to the Disaster SBA

8 DA-09-01a_10: GEOSS Quality Assurance Quality Quality Assurance Framework for Earth Observation (QA4EO) Implementation POC:Pascal Lecomte/Gregory Stensaas (WGCV) Lyn Oleson/Ken McDonald (WGISS) Planned Deliverables: (WGCV) May 09: Work with CEOS WGISS on Cal/Val data access Jun 09: Develop and initiate an implementation plan for QA4EO Sep 09: Organize a community workshop to address implementation of QA4EO Nov 09: Establish outreach activities to promote QA4EO within the user community Current Status: - Initiate plan to cooperate with WGCV on QA4EO for LSI portal and Data Harmonization Way Forward-LSI IG and WADC project to further coordinate with WGCV

9 HE-09-01_1: Information System for Health Develop a long-term plan to support critical space-based imagery to support modeling, forecasting and monitoring of health issues. POC:Stephan Falke/NASA Planned Deliverables: (Health SBA) Jul 7-9, 2009: Workshop at WMO in Geneva, Prepare a plan of implementation Nov 2010: Earth Observation Handbook for health Current StatusWGISS is ready to support Health SBA 1) IDN Health Data and Services Portals 2) Atmospheric Composition –AC Portal 3) Flood Monitoring Grid Sensor web Way Forward- WGISS will seek for opportunity to give a presentation at Health Workshop, GEO VI plenary - Further Coordination with Health SBA to be determined from SBA’s Requirement/Need

10 HE-09-01_2: Information System for Health Demonstrate a global smoke plume and dust forecasting product (IDEA) using multiple satellites and trajectory models for air quality health hazards POC:Jack Fishman Karen Moe (WGISS) Planned Deliverables: (Health SBA) IN PROGRESS - 48hr automated aerosol forecasts have been archived for statistical analysis. Aeronet aerosol optical depth measurements have been acquired for forecast verification Current Status:Closed Way Forward-

Anticipated WGISS involvement in CEOS Demo at GEO IV and CEOS plenary AC Portal Demonstration Leader: ACC Co Lead (NASA/ESA) WGISS Rep: Stefan Falke (NASA) Presenter: Stefan Falke (NASA) Climate Diagnostics Portaal Demonstration Leader: Climate SBA Lead (NOAA) WGISS Rep: Lola Olsen (NASA) Presenter: Mitch Goldberg (NOAA) Sensor Web for Disaster Response VDO Leader: WGISS WGISS Rep: Frye, Stuart W. and Mandl, Daniel J.
