5 What is Accreditation? Accreditation is a collegial process based on self and peer assessment for public accountability and improvement of academic quality. Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)

8 History ACBSP established in 1989 in Kansas City. Focus on teaching excellence and all degree levels. International accreditation from beginning. August 1992 recognized by the Dept. of Education. January 2001 was recognized by Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Change in philosophy, membership, and staff structure in 2003 to reflect new way of doing things. 9 Membership Overview Currently 532 educational members and 12 corporate members. This includes over 5,400 individual members. Educational members include 308 accredited, 155 candidates, and 69 members without accredited status. Currently 168 associate degree institutions, 342 baccalaureate degree institutions and 22 offer and are accredited in both. Members outside the United States total 47 in 20 countries. 11 Separate boards and standards for associate and baccalaureate/graduate degree programs. Shift away from prescriptive process to continuous improvement process. Focus upon excellence in teaching and student learning outcomes (evidence-based). Focus upon the mission of the institution. 12 Cost is about $12,000. Timetable can be 18 – 24 months or up to 5 years. A preliminary questionnaire is followed by a self-study followed by a site visit followed by feedback. Ten year accreditation granted. A Process that Supports Your Success Use of process for regional accreditation. A Mentor and Commissioner is provided to assist. 16 Part of desire to offer new products and services to meet unmet needs. Provide external validation of quality of accounting program as outlined earlier. Offer benefits of accreditation outlined earlier. One motivation is desire by NASBA to link state board decisions to accreditation agencies. Currently offered by AACSB. 17 Standards adopted by baccalaureate/graduate degree membership in June 2006. Criteria to implement standards drafted during fall and presented to Board in November. Currently being shared for review and comment by various parties. Proposed to be implemented by June 2007 but that date may be later in 2007 or in 2008. 18 Only baccalaureate/graduate degree programs, not associate degree programs. Requires business accreditation and is linked. Does not propose creation of separate board or site visit, but is integrated with current processes. Proposed cost for concurrent with business accreditation would be about $3,400 for fees, mentor, and expenses of one site team member. About $7,000 if not concurrent. 19 Content of the Common Professional Component. How the CPC for business ethics is met…with a standalone course or integrated course and related issue of who teaches the courses.
