2. Lesson Objectives: I can identify ways in which organisms are adapted to compete for things they need to survive. I can describe some similar interactions that are found within an ecosystem. I can compare instinctive behaviors and learned behaviors.

3. Time To Investigate! Follow these steps: 1.) Using the chart you got when you came into the classroom, predict which color would be easiest to find in the grass (red, blue, green, or yellow). Record your prediction on the paper. 2.) Follow my instructions and example in order to complete the experiment.

4. Drawing Conclusions Answer the following on the back of your chart. Look at the data you recorded for each hunt. What color of circles were collected least? Were the results of each hunt the same, or were they different? Explain. Compare the results with what you predicted. Do the results match your predictions? Explain why or why not. Based on the data you gathers, what can you infer about the survival changes of brown-colored insects in areas which grasses and leaves turn brown in the fall?

5. Ways in Which Organisms Compete Read “Competition for Limited Resources” on page B42 with your table. STOP when you get to “Sharing Resources”. What are two resources that organisms compete for? Food Water Sunlight Shelter

6. Read “Sharing Resources” on page B43 – B44 with your table. STOP when you get to “Symbiosis”. Why don’t warblers compete for food, even though they all eat insects in the same tree? Because the feed at different levels in the tree.

7. Read “Symbiosis” on page B45 with your group. STOP when you get to the end of the page; do NOT go on to the next page. What is symbiosis? A long-term relationship between different kinds of organisms.

8. Ready “Instincts and Learned Behaviors” with your table on page B46. STOP when you get to “Summary”. What is the difference between an instinct and a learned behavior? An instinct is inherited; a learned behavior is not.
