1 The Güssing Model An example for a sustainable energy supply
Christian Keglovits

2 Location Burgenland District of Güssing Town of Güssing
Area (km²) 3.966 Population District of Güssing Area (km²) 485 Population Town of Güssing Area (km²) 49,3 Population 3.764

3 Our Güssing …

4 Situation at the end of the 1980s
50 years alongside iron curtain no industry high rate of unemployment 70% commuters high rate of migration small structured agriculture bad traffic infrastructure

5 The Güssing Model The Goal:
…is the strategy of a decentralized local energy production with the existing renewable resources of a region! The Goal: … to get independent from fossil energy in order to strengthen the regional added value! This strategy can be adapted individually wherever resources are available. 5

6 Milestones in Güssing Since 1990:
Energy efficiency measures and beginning with production of heat out of biomass Since 2001: Production of electricity (biomass and photovoltaic) Since 2008: Beginning of important research projects (production of synth. Natural gas and production of synth. Liquid fuels). New research institute! Goal for 2011: Pilot project 2MW demonstration plant -> gasification of waste

7 The district heating system of Güssing
Since 1996: Gradual grid-development Current grid 35km Convincing arguments: No loss of comfort! Stable energy price!

8 Costs of heating

9 Parador Parkett

10 Photovoltaic plant Güssing& Production of photovoltaic cells
Since 2004 Capacity: 27,9 kWp Average amount of Energy: ca. 30MWh Since 2008: 140 jobs Invest. 50 Mio€ Average efficiency of monocrystalline solar cells: 17,5% Annual output: 85MWp

11 Biomass power plant- wood gasification Since 2001 Heat Electricity
Synth. Natural Gas (BioSNG) Liquid synth. fuels

12 Anaerobic digestion plant Strem
Since 2004 Heat Electricity Biogas

13 demonstration plant Güssing
Methanisation demonstration plant Güssing Since 2008 420kWh heat and 182 Nm³ BioSNG produced out of 1 ton of wood chips 1Nm³ SNG -> 10kWh

14 Forschung in Güssing Since 2009 K1-Research Institute „Bioenergy 2020+“ Private Non-Profit Research Institute „Güssing Energy Technologies GmbH“

15 Heat, Electricity, synthetic Natural Gas, synth. liquid fuels
Out of these resources we are producing… Heat, Electricity, synthetic Natural Gas, synth. liquid fuels

16 Energy balance – town of Güssing
Total annual demand (2008): heat (33GWh private, 40GWh public + industries) GWh electricity (7GWh Privat, 33,4GWh Öffentl. Geb. + Gewerbe u. Industrie) 40,4 GWh fuels GWh Annual production of energy (2008): heat – 4 biomass-district heating plants ,2GWh heat – private (cockle stoves, pellets, etc) ,5 GWh electricity – 2 CHP plants ,2GWh Since 2009 Methanisation (Prod. synth. natural gas) projected 8,4GWh/a Current degree of self sufficiency regarding heat and electricity: regarding private households and public buildings % incl. industries and commercials approx %

17 CO² Emissions in Güssing
2009: t/a 1996: t/a

18 For the town of Güssing The added value For the district of Güssing
More than 50 new companies More than new jobs netting € 9 Mio. a year Total sales volume of energy € 13 Mio. a year (2005) Total wood consumption tons a year For the district of Güssing 45% self sufficiency netting 18 Mio. EURO Potential in case of 100% self sufficiency 37 Mio. EURO

19 Plants in the district of Güssing

20 Network EEE Demo- plants Research & Development Advanced Training
Service Ecoenergy Tourism

21 Regional Bioenergy Partnership
Local initiative by the local government Resulted in EEE Association Managing Board and RBP of MIB consists of: Local government Representative of Regional biomass plants Regional Management (->Link to E.U.) Province government State Ministries Private members Operating unit Administration Policies Demonstration plants In Güssing (town), all over the region and other districts EEE GmbH Dissemination& Distribution of Güssing Model Energy concepts and policies regional & nationwide. Coop with Province gov. and state gov. R&D based on national and international cooperation

22 Energy concepts – process
Development of energy concepts – process: Collection of data (surveys) Private households Public buildings Economy/businesses Analysis of data and calculations Estimation of energy demand Potential of energy savings Resources and potential of substitution CO2 – emissions Evaluation of measures Action plan

23 Energy concepts – results
Energy concept – content: Used energy sources & current energy demand Possible energy savings subdivided in following sectors: private households public sector (public buildings, street lighting, etc.) industry Available resources to cover the energy demand – ratio between available resources & current energy demand Evaluation of measures CO2 – emissions & potential savings
