1
Arc Welding
2
Fusion Weld Where the edges of the base metal are melted together and solidify
3
Arc Welding -Welding with electricity- where the Arc is the heat source SMAW = Shielded Metal Arc Welding GMAW = Gas Metal Arc Welding FCAW = Flux Core Arc Welding
4
Striking an Arc -Getting current flowing in the circuit- Two methods- scratching and tapping
5
Machine/Amperage Setting Heat setting on the machine- the higher the amp setting- the hotter the Arc
6
Electrode Welding rod (6013 / 6011) Coated with flux, the filler metal is the same as the base metal. Consumed in the weld and becomes part of the bead; adds strength to the weld.
7
Arc Length -Distance from the end of the electrode to the base metal; equal to the diameter of the bare end of the electrode.
8
Travel speed -How fast the rod is moved along the base metal- Puddle should be two times the diameter of rod. 1” of bead should equal 1” of electrode.
9
Electrode Angle -Travel Angle =The angle of the electrode to the base metal in the direction of travel- should be 60’-80’F -Work Angle = The angle of the electrode to the weld.
10
Base metal -The metal the weld is being made on
11
Bead -The deposited metal on the base metal by the melting electrode
12
Pass -Each bead deposited on the base metal
13
Ultra Violet/Infrared Rays Rays emitted from the arc, harmful to eyes and skin.
14
Welding Helmet Used in arc welding to protect eyes and face from rays, heat, and sparks. #10 - #11 lens.
15
Electrode Holder Holds the electrode, provides a handle to hold while welding.
16
Ground Clamp Connected to the work table or piece of metal to complete the electrical circuit.
17
Welding Rod The Electrode (6013 / 6011) Same metal as base metal. Consumed in the weld and becomes part of the bead; adds strength to the weld.
18
Leathers Protective clothing made from leather to protect the welder from heat, rays, and sparks. Jackets and aprons.
