GOOD MORNING  GET YOUR NOTES FROM LAST CLASS OUT PLEASE  AT SOME POINT BY THE END OF CLASS SIGN UP FOR SCHOOLOGY ACCESS CODE: NMTQV-7N82K ACCESS CODE: NMTQV-7N82K

Material Cycles The flow of an element through the physical environment and living tissues of an ecosystem

What is Recycled?  More than 30 chemical elements are cycled through the environment by material cycles  Some examples are : Water Water Carbon Carbon Nitrogen Nitrogen Phosphorous Phosphorous

Water cycle  Water ______________ into clouds.  Water falls as _________________.  ________ & _________ forms fresh lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, and ground water.  ___________ take up water  Water returns to the atmosphere through the process of _____________ & ________________. condenses precipitation Runoffseepage Roots evaporation transpiration

Condensation Seepage Runoff Precipitation Transpiration Evaporation Root Uptake The Water Cycle Condensation Precipitation Runoff Seepage Root Uptake EvaporationTranspiration

Carbon Cycle 1. In the atmosphere as carbon dioxide(CO 2 ) 2. In the ocean as dissolved CO 2 3. As calcium carbonate, which is part of bones and shells  Where is Carbon found?

Carbon Cycle  Plants take in CO 2 and use the carbon to make carbohydrates during photosynthesis.  Carbon (in the form of carbohydrates) is passed along the food chain.

Carbon Cycle  Carbon is released into the atmosphere by volcanic activity, respiration, burning of fossil fuel (industry), and by decomposition of organic matter.

Go to Section: CO 2 in Atmosphere CO 2 in Ocean

Nitrogen Cycle  Nitrogen is required to make amino acids which are used to build proteins

Nitrogen Cycle  Special bacteria which live on plant roots, take N 2 from the atmosphere and convert it to ammonia (NH 3 ) in a process called nitrogen fixation  Other bacteria break down ammonia from decaying organisms into nitrite (NO 2- ) or nitrate (NO 3- ) which is used by producers and consumers

The Nitrogen Cycle N 2 in Atmosphere NO 3 - Nitrate & NO 2 - Nitrite NH 3 Ammonia

Bacteria with plant roots

INORGANIC  a (1) : being or composed of matter other than plant or animal :  a (1) : being or composed of matter other than plant or animal : EX. mineralEX. mineral (2) : forming or belonging to the inanimate world EX. mineral

Phosphorus Cycle  Found mostly as inorganic compounds (minerals) 1. On land in rock and in soil 2. In the ocean as sediments Calcium Carbonate Shell Phosphorus rich Sediment

Phosphorus Cycle  Producers are able to bind phosphate into organic compounds (usable to us).  The producers get eaten by consumers who then acquire the phosphorus for their own use.  What do they use it for???…

Phosphorus Cycle  Phosphorus is essential to life because it is part of DNA RNA & ATP DNA RNA & ATP ATP = ENERGY! ATP = ENERGY!

Class Activity  Work with our partner to complete the Material Cycle cooperative activity  There are four diagrams that you need to complete  When your group is finished with one diagram, bring it up to your teacher for verification  You can use your notes for reference
