2 Narration not “Quotation ” When trying to determine point of view, you must look at the narration. Do not look at anything in quotation marks. Example: John looked at the paper. “I think I’ve seen this man,” he said.

3 Highlight Pronouns Find all of the pronouns in the narration. Highlight them. John looked at the paper. “I think I’ve seen this man,” he said. He turned to his friend and asked, “Do you know this man?”

4 What are your pronouns? Click on the pronouns you have highlighted. I, us, we You He, she, it, they, them

5 3rd Person Keep going!

6 Whose thoughts do we know? Click on the sentence that tells whose thoughts you know. Do you know what everyone is thinking? –Ex. John looked at the paper. “I think I’ve seen this man,” he thought. He turned to his friend and asked, “Do you know this man?” His friend thought he recognized the man. Do you know what the narrator is thinking? -Ex. John looked at the paper. “I think I’ve seen this man,” he thought. He turned to his friend and asked, “Do you know this man?” “ I believe that I do,” his friend replied.

8 We know the narrator’s thoughts STOP 3 rd person limited return End

9 I, us, we STOP 1st Person return End
