4 9/19/2015 Nick’s Story 2 Let’s read along on page 28. “Nick was sitting in his employment counselor’s office…” Questions after reading: Nick could have handed this situation much better. Use the story to find the answers to the questions on page 29.

5 9/19/2015 About Stop & Think The third rule of self-control is to stop and think. It doesn’t solve the problem, but it keeps it from getting worse until we can think more clearly.

6 9/19/2015 Stop & Think 3-Step Step 1: Be Quiet (Mouth) Slow down verbally. To keep self- control, you first have to stop talking. Step 2: Calm Down (Body) Slow down physically. Give yourself some time and space to calm down. Step 3: Think Positive (Mind) Finally, slow down mentally. Interrupt negative thinkng that makes you upset.

11 9/19/2015 Group Skit Activity How will you Stop & Think? _______________________________________ Prepare small group skits to role play your stressful work situation and your calm professional response to it. Do not try to solve the problem for now. Just show us how you could stay calm and get through it. Think about a hot spot situation at work: How can you Be Quiet (mouth)? How can you Calm Down (body)? How can you Think Positive (mind)?

12 9/19/2015 KEY POINT #1 KEY POINT #1 Stop & Think has three steps: Be Quiet (mouth); Calm Down (body); and Think Positive (mind). It takes a serious effort to use these steps in high risk situations.

13 9/19/2015 KEY POINT #2 KEY POINT #2 Stop & Think is like putting the brakes on. It doesn’t solve the problem, but it helps us slow down and get back in control so that we can think straight again.
