1 Faculty/Staff QEP Focus Groups Monday, February 18, 2013

2 Overview of Preliminary Implementation Plan: Purpose: The purpose of “Navigate: Get THERE through Team Advising” is to improve students’ academic planning skills through team advising.

3 Goal 1: Student Learning- Through team advising, students will set and make plans for achieving educational success goals. Student Learning Objectives: (The student will be able to... ) Demonstrate knowledge of the advising structure. Set an academic goal. Develop an academic plan. Demonstrate individual responsibility for academic success. Preliminary Target Audience: Fall 2014 Cohort Students (students who are new to VWCC) who are in a degree program and in SDV. Thereafter, first year students enrolled in a degree program and taking SDV.

4 Goal 2: College-To improve the quality of advising by forming an effective team. College Objectives: (The advising team will be able to... ) Understand their roles Have a greater awareness of the importance of advising and an academic plan Use the progressive model of advising Have a manageable advising workload Utilize technology to assist in efficiently serving students

5 Primary advising team members: Advising Specialists (i.e. Academic Advisors located in Chapman) Advising Liaisons (i.e. newly proposed but not yet approved full time positions to begin 2014) Faculty advisors (i.e. full-time teaching faculty members)

6 Other key points: Chapman Student Questionnaire Computer labs for student self registration QEP Director Case management system Consistent academic plan assignment for SDV Enhanced consistent communication Advising professional development

7 Where are we in the process of developing the QEP? Phase 1: Dialogue about QEP topics (Spring 2012) Phase 2: Topic selection Advising picked as broad topic by survey (Late Spring 2012) Literatu re review to narrow topic (Summer 2012) Teamwork Advising picked by survey (Beginning of Fall 2012) Phase 3: Focus (Fall 2012) Through multiple meetings, developed a preliminary 5 year action plan Phase 4: Design Phase (Spring 2013)

8 What committees are working this semester? Design Team Assessment Committee Budget Committee Professional Development Committee Technology Committee

9 What work is left to complete? Much committee work left to be completed to produce full implementation plan Anticipated QEP Report completion--End of Spring or Early Summer 2013 Semester October 1-3, 2013 SACS On-site visit
