4 What is Acceleration? How do you calculate it? Acceleration is the change in velocity. Acceleration can be positive or negative. Negative acceleration is called deceleration. Acceleration can be calculated by taking the change in velocity over the change in time.

5 Acceleration Example If your BattleBot starts from rest and travels up to 1 m/s in 4 seconds, what is your BattleBot’s acceleration? v 1 = 0 m/s v 2 = 1 m/s t 1 = 0 s t 2 = 4 s a = ? Define the known and unknowns Use the right formula Substitute in known values 0.25 m/s 2 Solution The BattleBot’s velocity changed 0.25 m/s every second within the time interval

6 Kinematics Equations Kinematics is a branch of physics that studies motion. With these equations and what we now know about distance, time, velocity and acceleration we can calculate any of these if unknown.
