The 7456 is a powerful and flexible POS Terminal targeted for food, general merchandise and convenience store environments. It provides exceptional scalability utilizing Intel Celeron and Pentium III processors to address a range of price/performance levels and operating system environments. As you will see, the 7456 offers superior connectivity for retail, with support for legacy peripheral interfaces such as RS-232 and PS/2, as well as emerging standards including Powered USB and a DVI video interface.
The 7456 features a compact modular design to save valuable space at the checkstand, while still providing flexible expansion options to support future needs. And, like all NCR Terminal offerings, the 7456 is retail hardened, providing the reliability, security and life cycle management retailers expect from NCR.

The 7456 is designed to provide retailers with the performance they need for today and tomorrow. As outlined here, the motherboard supports a range of Intel Celeron and Pentium III Socket 370 processors running at a variety of front-side-bus speeds. For DOS and entry level Windows environments, such as Windows CE, we offer a 566MHz Celeron as our value processor. For retailers implementing more robust applications and operating systems, such as Windows 2000, we offer an 850MHz Celeron Processor with a 100MHz front-side bus. And, for customers looking for leading edge performance in a retail POS terminal, we offer a 1GHz Pentium III processor with 133MHz front-side bus and 256KB of on on-die cache.
System performance is also enhanced with a 133MHz memory bus to take advantage of fast PC133 SDRAM. In addition, the platform supports Ultra DMA 100 (also known as ATA 100), providing a high speed disk interface up to 100MB/sec.

The 7456 includes an on-board video controller and delivers rich AGP graphics capabilities with support for VGA, SVGA and XGA resolutions. Video Memory is user configurable from 2 to 8MB and is shared with the system memory.
The 7456 features industry standard Video Interfaces providing customers with maximum flexibility and investment protection. A DVI-I port provides a unified digital and analog video interface and is available to support the latest generation of digital DVI-based displays, including the new NCR 5964 TFT LCD Display. An analog VGA port is also standard on the motherboard, providing an interface for legacy analog CRTs and analog LCD Displays.
In addition, depending on the 7456 model, we offer integrated Audio capabilities for multi-media applications so customers can connect external speakers or headphones without having to add a Sound Card.
Presenter Note: You can only connect one display to the motherboard using either the DVI or VGA port. For dual display configurations, PCI LCD Video cards will be available to drive a second display, and we will be able to take advantage of the multi-monitor capabilities now being built into operating systems such as Windows 2000.

While the 7456 features a compact cabinet, it provides the expandability to support current and future needs. In the initial release, we support from 64MB to 512MB of memory and provide 2 DIMM memory sockets to facilitate future memory upgrades. In addition, the system includes 2 PCI slots for PCI expansion cards. Note: the 7456 does not support older generation ISA cards.
The system includes a Flex Disk Drive standard and is available with a 20GB Hard Disk Drive. We also offer an option for 64MB of Compact Flash Memory which can be configured with or without a hard disk. The Compact Flash can be used as an alternative to CMOS memory, providing non-volatile storage of hard totals and other information. Or, depending on the operating system environment, it can be used in lieu of a hard disk and treated as a boot device.
Other options include an integrated Slimline CD ROM Drive as well as an integrated UPS battery, which provides a cost effective alternative to an external UPS.

Consistent with our strategy to provide retailers with maximum flexibility and investment protection, the 7456 provides an optimized mix of Powered USB and RS-232 connectivity.
Based on the model, the 7456 includes four or six Powered USB ports supporting the growing list of USB peripherals. One of these is a 24V Powered USB port to power a 24V printer plus three or five 12V Powered USB ports.
While the number of USB peripherals continues to grow, we recognize that RS-232 peripherals are still widely used since not all operating systems support USB, and many retailers may want to protect their investment in legacy RS-232 devices. For that reason we also provide four external RS-232 ports, three of which are powered. We also include an internal serial port dedicated to the the integrated UPS battery.
By providing a mix of Powered USB and RS-232 connectivity, we can help retailers protect their investment in legacy peripherals and software, while providing the flexibility to take advantage of next generation USB peripherals.
