11 Catalogs, Databases, & Search Engines A comprehensive list of the books, periodicals, maps, and other materials in a given collection. A large, regularly updated file of digitized information related to a specific subject or field. Computer software designed to help the user locate information available at sites on the World Wide Web by selecting categories from a hierarchical directory of subjects (example: Yahoo!) or by entering appropriate keywords or phrases (Google).

12 DEFINITIONS Sources that contain raw, original, non interpreted and unevaluated information. Sources that digest, analyze, evaluate and interpret the information contained within primary sources. They tend to be argumentative. Sources that compile, analyze, and digest secondary sources. They tend to be factual. TIMING OF PUBLICATION CYCLE Primary sources tend to come first in the publication cycle. Secondary sources tend to come second in the publication cycle. Tertiary sources tend to come last in the publication cycle. FORMATS--depends on the kind of analysis being conducted. Often newspapers, weekly and monthly-produced magazines; letters, diaries. Often scholarly periodicals and books. (Professors like these.) Often reference books. 14 Identifying Keywords Identify the significant terms and concepts that describe your topic from your thesis statement or research question. These terms will become the key for searching catalogs, databases and search engines for information about your subject.
