Ms. Christian’s Top Ten things to remember for the semester 1 final (all of the little things that are easy to forget)

Distribute the negatives! 8x + 16 – 2x = 4 – (2x + 6) 8x + 16 – 2x = 4 – 2x – 6 6x + 16 = -2x – 2 +2 +2 6x + 18 = -2x -6x - 6x 18 = -8x -8 X = -2 1/4 1.Distribute -1 to 2x and 6 2.Combine like terms 3.Solve for x 4.Check answer!

Write out steps! Write out the steps for ANY problem…you have got 2 hours to take the test, use it to be thorough! Example of a literal equation Solve for s 4st + s = 8t + 5s -5s - 5s 4st + s – 5s = 8t 4st – 4s = 8t s(4t – 4) = 8t (4t – 4) = (4t – 4) S = 8t (4t – 4) ***Use distributive property to pull out whatever you need to solve for!!

X & Y Intercepts 2(0) + 4y = 12 0 + 4y = 12 4y = 12 4 Y = 3 (0,3) Find the x & y intercepts Plug in 0 for x and solve for y ~then~ Plug in 0 for y and solve for x 2x + 4y = 12 2x + 4(0) = 12 2x + 0 = 12 2x = 12 2 x = 6 (6,0) TWO POINTS ON GRAPH!! Y intercept on Y axis X Intercept on X axis

Writing Horizontal Equations Horizontal Equations ALWAYS y = some number (2,3) (3,3) (-7,3) What does y always equal in these points? Y = 3 the answer!

Writing Vertical Equations Vertical Equations ALWAYS x = some number (-8,8) (-8,10) (-8,3) What does x always equal in these points? x = -8 the answer!

Horizontal/Vertical lines through a point We now know horizontal equations are always y = some # And vertical equations are always x = some # So if they give you a point and ask you to write an equation…ask what is x and what is y (2, -3) x = 2 (vertical equation) y = -3 (horizontal equation)

Slope! Given 2 points, use slope formula!!! M = y2 – y1 x2 – x1 And…don’t forget that if you have a negative y1 or x1 to subtract a negative! 11- (-3) 5 – (-2) = +14 / +7 = 2 LABEL POINTS FIRST!! (-2, -3) (5, 11)

Absolute Value There will ALWAYS be TWO answers!! X + 3 = 8 X + 3 = 8x + 3 = -8 -3 -3 -3 -3 X = 5x = -11

Graphing Inequalities 1.Put into y = mx + b 2.Graph like normal 3.Pick a test point to plug into equation 4.Shade TRUE side!! Dotted line for Solid line for

Inequalities… -2x > 10 -2 X < -5 If you multiplied or divided by a negative number…. FLIP SIGN!!! X < -3 -5 X > 15 (-5)

Last but not least…. Actually study Go to bed early eat a HEALTHY breakfast Bring a book to read when you are done…talking equals FAILING and ISI and Ms. Christian’s complete disappointment in your bad decision making.
