5. 5 Internet2 is a new concept to NYS K-12 institutions. Since last August, NYSERNet has made a concentrated effort to present at regional workshops to educate RIC Directors, BOCES Staff, Teachers, Information Technologists, Superintendents, and Administrators about I2 and NYSERNet. Here’s what we found: I2 is familiar to some in name only and to others there is no recognition. Lack of understanding of I2’s role in the classroom. Most still haven’t integrated the commodity Internet. Needs of K-12 differ greatly than those of higher education. What works for higher ed seems to have little if any impact on K-12 use. Lack of a “Best Practices” approach to I2 development especially with regard to teacher training. Lack of understanding by K-12 on how to secure I2 content in the classroom. No coordinated approach to scheduling I2 content Little communication between the State’s higher and little ed E-rate covers the cost of connecting and transmitting, but nothing for content Latest news about RIAA and I2 has been a cause for concern (security) Last mile solutions for facilities not in urban centers are too costly Lack of trained IT staff in IPv6 and I2 K-20 and Internet2 in NYS in 2005

6. 6 Internet2 is for the most part is an established concept to NYS K-12 institutions. In 2005, 1 of the 12 RICs was connected. In 2009, 7 of the 12 RICs are connected (roughly 50% of the entire K-12 community). MUSE RICs created a statewide Interconnect through which they aggregate connections to NYSERNet. NYSERNet is working with the K-12 community to explore and discover applications and content available on Internet2. Looking to expand workshops into higher education and possible other areas. Reestablishing NYSERTech. Lots of interest by multiple sectors to connect to NYSERNet. Stimulus funding may provide some help. K-20 and Internet2 in NYS in 2009
