2 Copyright © 2010, MBL@CS.NCTU What is OpenFlow? In a classical router or switch, the fast packet forwarding (data path) and the high level routing decisions (control path) occur on the same device. An OpenFlow Switch separates these two functions. The data path portion still resides on the switch, while high-level routing decisions are moved to a separate controller, typically a standard server.

It is useful to categorize switches into dedicated OpenFlow switches that do not support normal Layer 2 and Layer 3 processing, and OpenFlow-enabled general purpose commercial Ethernet switches and routers, to which the OpenFlow Protocol and interfaces have been added as a new feature
