New Jersey’s College & Universities integrating technologies into instruction, research and public service through an enhanced statewide data/video network George Laskaris

Impact of Internet2 and Next Generation Networks in Higher Education Providing “orders of magnitude” or a 100-fold increase in bandwidth capacity over current networks Providing advanced communications tools and collaborative opportunities between researchers around the world Enabling ambitious large-scale next generation projects and applications that support new research models Beginning to re-shape federal funding policies that favor diverse collaborative research paradigms

: Emerging National Trends in Support of Advanced Research Infrastructure : High performance GRID computing Optical networking (I2/National Lambda Rail) Large scale network attached storage supporting federated research repositories Ability to provide Terabits to the desktop Advanced data visualization capabilities supporting 100+ Megapixel displays

Benefits of Advanced Research Networks Collaboration opportunities with global communities and working groups Increased opportunities for grants $$ Ability to tap into remote expertise and experiences Ability to provide terabits to the desktop Ability to bring the world into the classroom

Current New Jersey Plans NJEDge is currently planning a next generation regional optical network that will support global collaborations and allow NJ researchers to successfully compete for federal research funding. Working with the NJPC to develop a research agenda for the state that will provide advanced technology infrastructure that supports research and development opportunities between academia and industry. Next generation infrastructure is needed to stimulate the economy and provide NJ with a competitive advantage.

About NJEDge.Net Statewide Higher Education Network –Provide a private high-performance network infrastructure (53 members) Created to support new forms of inter- institutional collaboration and to, Leverage collective buying power of the membership to achieve economies of scale

Advantages of the New Design 230% increase in bandwidth capacity Access to national optical networking initiatives – National Lambda Rail and federal research repositories Access to high-performance GRID computing – SUN Microsystems Disaster Recovery options with excess capacity – Sunguard

NJEDge Network Resources Broadband Internet Service Provider (900+Mbps) Sophisticated video conferencing & distance learning capabilities Streaming video resources Interoperability with the K-12 Video Portal (Access New Jersey) Shared access to Satellite Uplink/Downlink Provide peering and exchange points

NJEDge Network Capabilities Support for new forms of inter-institutional collaboration and statewide applications: –New joint programs between institutions –Resource sharing (expertise & equipment) –Coordinated professional development –Creation of optimal environments to support teaching and learning –New opportunities for research collaboration

. Network Capabilities Cont. “Extending the reach” of higher ed to: –Off-campus learners –K-12 –Corporate and community constituents Support research and development partnerships with industry

Efficiencies/Economies of Scale Internet services / Voice services Statewide software site licensing New joint statewide applications services: –Help Desk consortium –Disaster Recovery –Video on Demand Digital Library –Large-scale network attached storage Sharing of expensive scientific instrumentation

Building Community Organize statewide working groups –Distance Learning Academic Advisory Board –Coordinated Faculty Development Initiative – emphasis on showcasing best practices –Educational Activities Task Force –Data Resources Group –Video and Voice Resources Groups –Networking and the Performing Arts Initiative

Next Steps Exploring member interest in creating a research applications support group Plans underway to recruit and hire an Internet2 Applications Coordinator to facilitate support of the research community Looking to identify a high-profile collaborative research application between NJEDge members Planning hands-on workshops to demonstrate network interfacing of scientific instrumentation

Next Steps Collaborating with other state education networks building regional optical infrastructures to explore peering and optical exchange points
