Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics http://www.enchantedlearning.com/ subjects/dinosaurs/glossary/Contdrif t.shtml

Over 100 Million years ago, there was only one continent. This continent was called “Pangea”. Over the last 100 million years, “Pangea” split into several landmasses that drifted apart and eventually became the 7 different continents we have today.

Landform Evidence: Scientists have noticed that some of our modern continents seem to fit together like jigsaw pieces. This suggests that they were once joined together.

Fossils What are they?

Fossil Evidence: Scientists have also observed that fossils of ancient life forms appear in parts of the world separated by water. They inferred that this could only have happened if the landforms were once connected long ago.

The continents drift because they are on top of “tectonic plates” which float below the surface in the earth’s crust.

What happens along the boundaries between the tectonic plates: 1. Plates move slowly, either rubbing against each other, colliding with each other, or moving apart. 2. As a result of these movements, the plate boundaries make the world’s main zones for earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building. The most famous zone is the Ring of Fire, around the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
