3 “I Will Not Run” speech in 1968 The country was hugely divided by the Vietnam War. He knew he could not win re-election. He stepped aside so another Democrat could run for President (that person lost)

The Vietnam War and reaction around the country overshadowed what he had accomplished. 9 How he is viewed today LBJ stands with a handful of important presidents who had exceptional accomplishments and terrible failures. Johnson's reputation has been on the upswing as the Vietnam War fades and Americans recall that his Great Society and War on Poverty made great advances for which he deserves credit.
