LIFE CONNECTIONS: on murder and mayhem
Art is a Liberating Force LIFE CONNECTIONS: on murder and mayhem On Smokin’ Aces: "I've always wanted to make a film like this," states Eric Fellner, producer and co-chairman of Working Title Films. "One that has murder and mayhem... for want of better words." In films murders are always very clean. I show how difficult it is and what a messy thing it is to kill a man. Alfred Hitchcock ( ) Seeing a murder on television... can help work off one's antagonisms. And if you haven't any antagonisms, the commercials will give you some. Alfred Hitchcock ( ) It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets. Voltaire ( ) Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god. Jean Rostand ( ) As created beings we bear the hallmark of the creative character of god. To neglect ‘hearing’ the creative artistic voice is deafness to god.

CRITICS ARE 30% POSITIVE CRITICAL OPINION
The Free Speech Discussion of the Arts is a Mark of a Free Society CRITICAL OPINION CRITICS ARE 30% POSITIVE One question hovers over the carnage, though: Whom the hell are we supposed to root for? The closest the movie comes to sympathetic assassins are its hit ladies, yet the payoff to their subplot is the weakest of the bunch. -- Kirk Honeycutt Hollywood Reporter It's all a mad, mad, mad, mad whirl of bullets, bloodshed, the occasional breast and agonizingly lame jokes aimed at males who don't get out much. --Eleanor Ringel Gillespie Atlanta Journal-Constitution You can't take it seriously, but the movie is as lively as it is debased. --Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly

FILM REVIEW SMOKIN’ ACES FROM VISUAL HOLLYWOOD
Art is the Language of Liberation FILM REVIEW SMOKIN’ ACES FROM VISUAL HOLLYWOOD This is one of those films that enables the viewer to vent some of the darker passions we all share as fellow humans. Stories of murder and mayhem has always been a part of all human culture from the Sumerians, to Hebrew Bible writers, to Shakespeare, to Alfred Hitchcock. Because this theme has always existed – it must be important in fulfilling certain inner psychological need. What modern novelists and cinematic story tellers have been able to do is add a touches of humor into murder and mayhem. This group has done well. Enjoy! --David Bruce

FINDING TRUTH IN SMOKIN’ GUNS The amazing value of illusion
"What do you see right now? You see exactly, and only, what I choose to show you. That's illusion, Ivy. That's the lie I tell your eyes." - Buddy "Aces" Israel The amazing value of illusion Men decide far more problems by hate, love, lust, rage, sorrow, joy, hope, fear, illusion, or some other inward emotion, than by reality, authority, any legal standard, judicial precedent, or statute. --Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC) Illusion is the first of all pleasures. Oscar Wilde ( ) Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. Albert Einstein ( ), Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live. Mark Twain ( ) Society is only as free as its arts. Art is the voice of human freedom.

Movie Making is the Convergence of Many Talents and Art Forms
TRIVIA AND NEWS Smokin' Aces is an action film written and directed by Joe Carnahan set in Lake Tahoe and primarily shot at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa (though renamed the "Nomad Casino"). It marks Carnahan's sophmore feature, following Narc. It stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeremy Piven as the leads, with Piven (Entourage) as a Las Vegas magician turned Mafia informant and Reynolds as the FBI agent assigned to protect him. It is the feature film debut of Alicia Keys and hip hop artist Common. Reception The film received a mixed reaction. Many critics compared it to the works of Quentin Tarantino, with some providing flattering (and unflattering) comparisons to Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Some praised it for its humor and wit, as well as its highly-stylized cinematography. It profited $14.3 million in its first week.

WHY MOVIES ARE SO IMPORTANT
To Restrict Creativity is to Restrict the very Nature of the Creator WHY MOVIES ARE SO IMPORTANT "The meaning of life is the most urgent of questions" --Albert Camus (Existentialist thinker). In “Movies and the Meaning of Life” author Kimberly Blessing points out that movies can help us reflect on five of life’s most important questions: 1) What is reality and how can I know it? 2) How can I find my true identity? 3) What the significance of my interactions with others? 4) What’s the point of my life? 5) How ought I to live my life? The idea behind Visual Hollywood is that Movies can and must play an essential role helping us explore the meaning of our existence and our life together. No other quest is more necessary or important. Movies are powerful. Movies bring personal meaning, and can contribute to a peaceful world. Cinematic story telling can be a transforming event. Visual Hollywood takes an existential approach to life. We celebrate with human freedom. We use movies and the arts as a means of understanding the human condition and our collective relation to the world around us. Our basic quest is: 1. To know what it means to be human in the world. 2. The pursuit of human freedom.
