1 Anaphylaxis Protocol, 2006 An Act to Protect Anaphylactic Pupils Sabrina’s Law, 2005 Halton District School Board

2 Background:  HDSB Anaphylaxis Protocol first developed in 1999  Since Sept. 2005, multi-disciplinary team met and made revisions based on Sabrina’s Law  Current 2006 protocol is the same for both Halton school boards

3 What’s New for 2006? School–wide Management Plan Individual Student Monitoring and Risk Reduction Plan in addition to Emergency Treatment Form A communication plan Staff training plan Student file Parent/Guardian Package (elem & sec) to be completed during registration Anaphylaxis Operating Policy/Procedure

4 Sabrina’s Law: 6 parts 1. Strategies that reduce the risk of exposure to anaphylactic causative agents in classrooms and common areas 2. A communication plan for the dissemination of information on life threatening allergies to parents, students and employees 3. Regular training about dealing with life threatening allergies for all employees and others who are in direct contact with students on a regular basis

5 Continued…. 4. Each school will develop an individual plan for each student who has an anaphylactic allergy 5. On registration, each school principal will ensure that parents, guardians and students supply information on life threatening allergies 6. A file shall be maintained for each anaphylactic student which includes current treatment, evidence of the prescription and current emergency contact list.

10 School-wide Management Plan  Develop a School-wide Anaphylaxis Management Plan with input from School Council, teachers and other parents.  Elementary template, p. 52-54  Secondary template, p. 55-57  Parts of the Plan include: Overview, Identification of Children at Risk, Parent Responsibility, Emergency Protocol, Staff Training, Minimized Allergen Environment Strategies, Communication Plan (details p.14).

11 Create a file System  Create a file (p. 11) for each anaphylactic student that contains:  Request & consent to administer epinephrine, p.63  Proof of diagnosis: photocopy of prescription label  Copy of Emergency Treatment Form, (p. 30 or 65)  Copy of Individual Monitoring & Risk Reduction Plan, (handout)  Place a copy in documentation file of OSR

14 Where Do I Begin?  Share the Protocol and this ppt with school staff and School Council  Begin the development of your School-wide Management Plan with School Council  Contact parents of anaphylactic students and work with them to design the Individual Student Monitoring Plan  Use the new Anaphylaxis Emergency Treatment Form

15 How will the Anaphylaxis Team Help?  We will have common signs prepared and sent to schools  We will design the school-based training program (ppt) for your use with staff and volunteers  This Protocol, policy, Parent/Guardian Package and all forms are on chatt.
