3 Review: Jazz Chant Sally speaks Spanish, but not very well. When she tries to speak Spanish, you really can’t tell what language she’s speaking or trying to speak. The first time I heard her, I thought it was Greek.

5 Pronunciation: Jazz Chant His English is wonderful. He speaks very well. His accent is perfect. You really can’t tell that he isn’t a native of the U.S.A. There’s only one problem: he has nothing to say.

6 Review: Asking Opinions What do you think about/is… ? What is your opinion of/about…. ? How do you feel about… ? In pairs (groups of 2 people), ask each other for opinions about: The best food to eat in Fuzhou Places to visit in China Treatment for a cold ( 感冒 )

(It’s for (verb+ing) [what].) Describing Things Practice: Each person will receive a card with the name of an object written on it. In pairs, you will use the questions above to ask your partner to describe the object.

8 Exercise: 20 Questions In your groups of 4 people, one person will think of an object. The rest of the group must take turns asking closed questions until the group discovers what it is, or up to 20 questions. The person may only answer by saying “yes” or “no”. Example Questions: * Is it a living thing? A nonliving thing? * Is it bigger than a car? Smaller than an apple? * Is it red? Black? Multi-colored? * Can it be eaten? * Is it made of paper? Stone? * Is it used by students? Doctors? * Is it used in a school? Hospital? * Is there one in this classroom?

9 Homework Check: Names of Occupations and Jobs You were supposed to write down the names of as many occupations and jobs as you could think of. Brainstorm (share ideas quickly with the class): Write down only the occupations/jobs that you don’t have.

10 Practice: Talking about Occupations and Studies When you were young, what did you want to be? When I was young, I wanted to be a/an ________ (because…) What are you doing (or studying) now? Now I am working as a/an ________. OR Now I am studying ________.

12 A Canadian guest and a Chinese student, who have never met before, are standing next to each other at the bus stop. Chinese Student: Beautiful day, isn’t it? Canadian Guest: Yes, it is! Chinese Student: By the way, my name’s Jonathan Wei. Canadian Guest: Nice to meet you, Jonathan. I’m Laura Brown. Chinese Student: Nice to meet you, too, Ms. Brown. Canadian Guest: What do you do, Jonathan? Chinese Student: I’m a student. Canadian Guest: Oh, what school do you go to? Chinese Student: I go to Sichuan University. Canadian Guest: And what are you studying? Chinese Student: I’m studying English. Canadian Guest: Oh, really? I’m an English teacher at Sichuan Normal University.

13 Saying something about the weather: Beautiful day, isn’t it? Nice day, isn’t it? It’s terribly hot today, isn’t it? Nice weather we’re having! We’ve had a lot of rain lately, haven’t we? What awful weather we’re having! “By the way...”: a phrase used to introduce or change a topic

14 Asking about someone’s occupation (or field of study) What do you do? What line of work are you in? Where do you work? What are you studying? What’s your major? Where do you go to school? What classes are you taking?

15 Saying something about the situation in which you meet the other person Great party, isn’t it? Interesting play, isn’t it? Wonderful concert, isn’t it? It’s a lovely wedding, isn’t it? Nice picnic, isn’t it? Exciting football game, isn’t it?

16 Practice: Continuing Conversations Each person will receive a card with the following information on it: - A phrase about the weather or the situation - A name - Occupation or field of study Using the information, you will have 30 seconds to start a conversation, introduce yourself and what you do with another person. After 30 seconds, you will exchange cards and change partners
