Diseases that are not spread by pathogens, but instead by heredity, birth, lifestyle or the environment. These diseases are often called chronic and degenerative: Chronic- diseases that are present continuously or off and on over a long period of time Degenerative- diseases that cause further breakdown in body cells, tissues and organs as they progress.
Some diseases are caused by heredity, they are passed down in your genes from one generation to another ex. Cystic fibrosis, Downs Syndrome Some are caused by birth defects. They may be a result of genetics as well, or harmful substances in the environment. For example, if a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, she may give birth to a baby with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Many diseases present at birth are multifactorial- due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Many people have risk factors- characteristics that increase their risk of developing a disease.
