9 Weaknesses of the Articles The Federal government lacked power to: – Enforce laws they created – Tax citizens to raise money – Regulate trade No Executive Branch No Judicial Branch (courts) 9 of 13 states needed to pass a law 13 of 13 states needed to amend a law

10 Successes of the Articles Provided a form of government through the Revolutionary War Passed the Land Ordinance of 1785 Passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Led to Constitutional Convention – creation of our Constitution

11 Land Ordinance of 1785 Law that came up with a system to divide up and sell the land west of the Appalachian Mountains or “Northwest Territory” Divided land into 6 mile – square plots called townships

12 Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Described how the “Northwest Territory” was to be governed – When 5,000 free males who owned at least 50 acres they could elect an assembly – When 60,000 people, could apply to be a state – Freedom of religion – Slavery banned – Trial by jury
