2 Early Years born in Urbino in 1483 received his first instruction in the techniques of painting from his father, Giovanni Sanzi Giovanni introduces him to the humanist court of Urbino, one of Italy’s most active cultural centers

3 Pious Apprentice At the age of fourteen, Raffaello is sent to a very talented teacher called Pietro Perugino Perugino and his paintings have a strong influence on Raffaello’s early artworks With his great understanding of art, Raffaello quickly surpasses his teacher and ventures out on his own to the great city of Florence

4 From Apprentice to Master In Florence, Raffaello finds a very competitive environment He adopts new painting techniques such as shading, anatomy, and frozen action His style is influenced by that of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci In just a few years, he earns the title of “prince of painters” and becomes the most sought-after artist in the city

7 One of the most frequently discussed and most loved paintings of the Renaissance is Raphael's “Sistine Madonna.” For many people it remains the supreme example of western painting, and its popularity is virtually as great as that of the Mona Lisa

8 After finishing the frescos in the Vatican Palace, Raffaello went on to the Stanza d’Eliodoro (1511 and 1514) Here, with unparalleled talent, he depicted Christian historical events, illustrating salvation and divine intervention Throughout his artistic career, Raffaello went back many times to painting’s portraying Madonna and child

9 Last days Raffaello painted more then forty Madonnas before his untimely death in 1520 After suffering in bed for fifteen days, he died on his birthday at the young age of 37 In his short life, Raffaello summarized and embodied the entire course of Italian humanism He ranks along with Leonardo or Michelangelo as one of the greatest artists of all time

10 Raffaello’s last piece of artwork was the monumental “Transfiguration” The painting was carried with him during the funeral procession
