Anchorsholme Primary School Games used in the teaching of sports.

Physical Education (P.E) at Anchorsholme Every child from ages 5 – 11 receive two hours of P.E each week. P.E Activities include: - Gymnastics -- Games -- Outdoor/Adventurous Activities -- Swimming -- Dance -- Athletics

Warm-up Games Each session starts with a warm-up activity to raise children’s heart rate, get blood flowing to their muscles and get them ready for the P.E lesson. Warm-up sessions usually take the form of games, as the children enjoy these, they encourage participation from the start of the lesson and are motivating.

Upside Down, Right Side Up Place markers on the hall floor, some the right way up and some upside down. Children are divided into two teams – one team has to turn the markers over the right way, whilst the other has to turn them upside down. At the end of two minutes, the winning team is the team with most markers their way up.

Stuck in the Mud Children find a space in the hall. One child is chosen to be ‘on’ The child who is ‘on’ has to tag as many children as possible. Once a child has been tagged, they must stand still like a scarecrow with their arms and legs wide until another child ‘frees’ them by running under their arms or crawling under their legs.

Ball Between the Feet Children stand in a circle, with legs apart, touching the feet of the person next to them. A child is chosen, to roll the ball at speed in to the circle. If the ball rolls through someone’s legs, that person is out, and must leave the circle.

Beans! Children stand in a space in the hall. The teacher calls out a series of different names for beans. After each type of bean is called out, the children need to do a certain action. -Mexican Jumping Bean – Jump up and down -Chilli Bean – Shiver, rub arms and hold them close to body -Runner Bean – Run on the spot -Broad Bean – Make yourself as wide as possible -Beans on Toast – lie side-by-side with a partner, top to tail -String Bean – Make yourself as tall and thin as possible -Jelly Bean – Wobble, shaking arms and legs -French Bean – Stand with hand on hip and say ‘Ooh la la!’

Cats and Mice Choose two children to be ‘cats’, whist the rest of the children are ‘mice’. They each have to move around the hall like a cat or a mouse. The cats have to try and catch as many mice as they can. Once a mouse has been caught it turns in to a cat and chases the other mice. The game is over when all the children are cats.
