IPv6 Education and Deployment Efforts in Japan 2001.7.4 Takashi Arano NTT Communications

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications Japanese Deployment Efforts  Governmental – IPv6 Council (Kyogikai) – JGN (Japan Gigabit Network) IPv6  R&D – WIDE IPv6 / NSPIXP6 / Kame / Usagi / TAHI  Industrial – IAJapan IPv6 Deployment Committee – JPNIC IPv6 project – IPv6 Operation Study Group  Publication – IPv6 Journal (RIIS) – v6start (Nikkei BP)

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications IPv6 Council  Initiated by Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications  Chair: Jun Murai  Not only router vendors and service providers, but home appliance developers etc. are involved  TAO (Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan) conducts a nation-wide IPv6 experiment including home appliance application development, using budget of 8 billion Yen (= $ 800k).

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications IAJapan IPv6 Deployment Committee  Promote Japanese IPv6 Deployment in Industry – held IPv6 conferences for enlightment and education such as “IPv6 Day” – publish IPv6-related articles in IAJapan Review, etc. – be a liaison to IPv6 organization and conferences in other countries  Stimulated by successful Global IPv6 Summit in Japan, held at Osaka in Dec. 2000  Established in Apr.2001  Executive Chair: Toru Takahashi, Vice Executive Chair: Jun Murai, Ryoichi Hosoya, Chair: Takashi Arano

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications “IPv6 Day” - Let's Develop an IPv6 Technical Map-  A half-day conference organized by IPv6 Deployment Committee, at Chiba on 6 June 2001  Reviewed current status and issues from various points of views – router and routing, server and applications (incl. DNS), ISP operation, enterprise and home network and application, address policy and management  Each element is almost ready except DNS v6 transport, etc.  Operation and management technology, new security model, new applications are expected to be studied more.

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications IPv6 Journal  First Journal in the world regarding IPv6 – Two issues were already published.  Issued by RIIS (Research Institutes for Internet Strategies) Executive Advisor: J.Murai, T.Takahashi – Editors: Arano(Chief), Esaki, Ogino, Maemura, Yokomizo, Fujimoto – http://www.riis.ad.jp/ipv6/ http://www.riis.ad.jp/ipv6/  Examples of contents: – NAT: Pros and Cons – IPv6 Address Policy Tutorial – Recent Discussion regarding DNS – Internet Car Research – Company & Product Status Reports – Conference reports (this summit will be reported) – Learn from Korea!, planned:-)

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications IPv6 Operation Study Group  Over 30 ISP operators and/or JANOG members are discussing from a “real operational” point of view  Example topics to be discussed – Address policy Is the 80% rule really necessary? Efficient Address management? – Routing Routes to be announced among ISPs? How to do Traffic Engineering using a single prefix? Multihoming – Any missing pieces to deploy IPv6 just like IPv4? Network monitoring, DNS, Renumbering, Transition tools …

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications Other Activities  JPNIC IPv6 project – Develops IPv6 registry systems – Proposes a new IPv6 policy  v6start – Nikkei-BP is one of major publishers – Providing educational web pages – http://v6start.net/ http://v6start.net/

Global IPv6 Summit in Korea ©2001, Takashi Arano, NTT Communications Summary  In Japan, research sectors have tried to develop new types of applications such as home appliances in a national scale.  However, IPv6 is more than just research topics. More and more traditional IPv4 people have started to be involved in IPv6 deployment in a business sense.
