2 Many farmers once depended on cotton for their income.

3 Today, many farmers grow or produce a wide variety of crops and animals for their income. Livestock Peach Tree Peanut Plants Rice Fields

4 Some of the main crops in the South include: Wheat, cotton, rice, sugarcane, citrus fruits, pecans and peanuts. Texas is mostly known for growing wheat and cotton. Louisiana and Arkansas are mostly known for growing rice and sugarcane. Florida and Texas are mostly known for cultivating citrus fruits. But what are citrus fruits? Georgia is known for growing pecans and peanuts.

5 The cities continue to New York, Philadelphia and ending in the Nation’s Capital, Washington DC. Oil and natural gas are drilled for in the states of Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. Texas oil wells, below and right Natural gas, top left

6 Coal is mined in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee

7 Southern states are leading producers of salt, sulfur and zinc. Mining Their Own Business Sulfur, above Zinc, below Salt, left

8 Chesapeake Bay area is famous for its shellfish

9 All the Southern states enjoy an active timber industry

10 One of the South's most important industries is the textile industry.

11 Today, the South is enjoying a great deal of growth in new industries, such as high-technology industry, aerospace and cable television

12 Most of the South’s important cities play an important role in transportation

13 The South’s sunny skies and warm weather attracts tourists

16 The change from an agriculture-based economy to an industry-based economy is called industrialization

17 Population continues to grow in the Sun Belt. Some come for the jobs in industry, but more move to warm weather to retire. The South is part of the Sun Belt, which is an area of America. It stretches from the southern Atlantic coast to the coast of California.”
