3  Used by early supercomputers of IBM (1970s-1980s)  Price of SSD too expensive  General Instruments used EAROM in 1970s  Early version of NAND flash  Life span of this was <10 years

4  M-Systems introduced flash-based SSDs, 1995  No batteries required  High I/O performance and reliability  Not as fast as DRAM  Since then SSD successfully replace HDD  Slowly becoming more mainstream
