MOTIVATING OUR STUDENTS OUTCOME-BASED EDUCATION (OBE) TEAM SCHOOL OF SCIENCE 1
2
OUTLINE Background Sharing from Guest Speakers Prof. Che Ting Chan Prof. Shing Yu Leung Discussion 2
3
PROBLEMS WE FACE Students… Skip classes Chat/sleep in class Use mobile phone/laptop in class No target Too passive How to motivate them? 3

SHARING 4
5
5 Professor Che Ting Chan Chair Professor, Department of Physics 2012 Common Core Course Excellence Award (The Honorary Mention) 1999 Michael Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching MOTIVATING OUR STUDENTS
6
6 Motivation: Why? Do we need to “motivate” if the students feels that they – Can gain something if they do something? – Lose something if they do nothing? Do we need to “motivate” a medical school student? In SSCI, what is the perception of the students?
7
7 Problem and Solution ? Do we have a problem: – The answer is probably yes. – Too bad that we are in SCI Do we have a panacea? – Probably no, because it depends on the students Which area? Physics is among the worst Are they majors? What level ?

8 Method that may work Make the course interesting – Some students are curious, satisfy these students – Most like movies Make it comprehensible – Sounds easy, actually very difficult especially if the class is “mixed” – In class (videotaped) and out of class (detailed notes, tutorial, support…etc)
9
9 Method that may work Something “to take home” – Highlight real-world applications of knowledge – Relevance to students’ career (e.g. Comp Phys) – You need to explain why that knowledge is useful Allow them to “participate” – Projects Healthy competition – Using grades as a tool – Fair

10 Professor Shing Yu Leung Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics 2011 Best Ten Lecturers MOTIVATING OUR STUDENTS
11
What do we actually want? – class attendance? – engaged to the course? – lifelong learner? Why aren’t they motivated? – too busy? – elective course vs. required course – teaching too fast?... or too slow? – teaching style? How can I improve their motivation? – enthusiasm – presentation style – flow of the materials, any possible difficulty, … 11

DISCUSSION/SHARING 1.Do we need to make the class more interesting to motivate students? How? 2.Does getting feedback early into the course improve final evaluation? Please share if you have any experience. 3.If there are students who are satisfied to get a C and move on, how do you motivate them? 4.How to prepare for classes when teaching the 4Y cohort students? 5.Any sharing of good/bad experience of using new technology in class? 12
