1 Blended Learning: Current Trends and Issues
Prof. Sandeep S. Sahare, Dean, Faculty of Technology, University of Mumbai, India

2 Abstract The term “Blended Learning” is being used with increased frequency in both academic and corporate circles. This paper outlines the model of blended learning which has evolved in a large environment, undergraduate subjects offered across multiple campuses. Blended learning system combine face-to-face instruction with computer mediated instruction. Traditional face-to-face and distributed environment which allows development of blended learning system is discussed. Also current trends and issues are outlined.

3 Introduction A blended learning approach can combine face-to-face instruction with computer-mediated instruction. It also applies science or IT activities with the assistance of educational technologies using computer, cellular or iPhones, Satellite television channels, video conferencing and other emerging electronic media. Learners and teachers work together to improve the quality of learning and teaching. The ultimate aim of blended learning being to provide realistic practical opportunities for learners and teachers to make learning independent, useful, sustainable and ever growing.

4 How can we encourage our students to learn outside the classroom
How can we encourage our students to learn outside the classroom? Studies have shown that most language learning happens outside the classroom, in a blend of various learning environments. How can we integrate traditional classroom teaching with hi-tech alternatives?

7 Face-to-face (F2F) and Distributed Environment

8 Dimensions of interaction in F2F and distributed learning environments

9 Current Trends and Issues
Improved Pedagogy Increased Access/Flexibility Increased Cost Effectiveness Using generic software Using a Learning Management System Using Web 2.0 tools Using other technology

10 Other Issues are: Teachers need to consider how to integrate these
resources into lesson plans. Teachers need training on how to find such resources or how to create content for themselves Skill level and experience of learners will need to be considered when planning first use of these tools. Communicating effectively online is an issue and some thought will need to be given some rules/guidelines for writing in this medium. It's important to discuss issues of confidentiality and privacy with students before they become part of online learning communities Expectations for student and facilitator will need to be explored early on in the process but set ground rules for how students should work with each other

11 Scope and Challenges Future learning systems will be differentiated not based on whether they blend but rather by how they blend. Teaching style has changed a lot due to blended learning. Students, faculty and administrator groups who have experience blended learning courses. The four challenges identified were; the expectation that fewer classes meant less work, inadequate time, management skills, problems with accepting responsibility for personal learning and difficulty with more sophisticated technologies. From a faculty perspective, the key challenges of teaching in a blended format are: the time commitment, lack of support of course redesign, difficulty in acquiring new teaching and technology skills and the risk factors associated with this type of courses. Resistance to organizational change in higher education is well documented phenomenon. Lack of collaborative organizational structure and internal partnerships can pose a formidable barrier to blended learning initiatives .
