Strategy – Asking and Answering Questions Good readers continually ask themselves questions as they read. They look for the answers to the questions they have asked themselves. While we read today we will be asking questions.

Visualizing Good readers try to visualize or get a picture in their head about what they are reading. Making these pictures in your head will help you remember the story.

Summarizing Good readers stop every few pages and summarize what they have read. They also do this when they read something over several days. Before they start reading again, they summarize what they have already read. This helps them remember what they have read.

Choral Read Page 28 We learned from the story that Ut’s mother is far away in Vietnam, and Ut has to go to her new American school without her mother there to comfort her. What will Ut’s first day at school be like? Will Ut feel shy?

Asking and Answering Questions Will the other students be nice to her? Will she make friends quickly? We read that a boy with fire-colored hair pointed at Ut and shouted, “Pajamas!...They wore white pajamas to school!”

Asking and Answering Questions We learned that Ut was already feeling shy and lonely because she “hugged the wall and peeked around the corner.” What other questions do you have about the story? Let’s read on and see what happens to Ut.

Choral Read Pages 29 and 30 Why are the other students in Ut’s class laughing at her? We know that she is a new student. I think it is because the other students haven’t had a chance to get to know her yet.

Asking and Answering Questions I don’t think they’re being nice to Ut. Why do you think that the other students are treating Ut this way? What do you think of the way they’re acting? How would you feel in Ut’s place? I would feel sad if I was treated like that.

Choral Read Pages 31 and 32 Forming mental images in your head about what the author is telling you helps you better understand and enjoy the story. What images did you form in your head? more

Visualizing In my head, I see Ut looking at her mother’s picture. I can almost hear Ut’s mother’s voice telling her to be brave. I know that Ut’s mother is still in Vietnam, but Ut has a picture of her mother in the small wooden matchbox she keeps in her desk. more

Visualizing Talking to the picture of her mother makes Ut feel better. I think she’s imagining that her mother is with her, and she is thinking of what her mother would say to her if she could be with her. more

Visualizing I think Ut misses her mother so much and is so sad that she has closed her mind to the other children’s hurtful laughter and is thinking only of her mother now. It is as if Ut can see, hear, and feel her mother there with her. more

Visualizing As I think about how Ut feels, I can see Ut, but I can also imagine Ut’s mother’s picture. Good readers are always getting images in their heads about what they read. If you get a good one, raise your hand to tell the class about it.

Asking Questions I’m confused about something. Why does Ut think you can catch snow? Why does she seem to know so little about snow? I think I can figure this out by rereading. more

Asking Questions It’s probably winter. I know that Ut and her sister are from Vietnam. I also know that Vietnam has a tropical climate, because I have read other stories about the country. I think that Ut and her sister have never seen snow before. more

Asking Questions This is probably their first winter in America, and snow is new to them. Remember to keep asking questions and figuring out the answers as you read.

Summarizing A lot has happened in the story so far. Sometimes understanding a story is easier if you think about what you’ve read and sum up the most important ideas in your own words. Good readers summarize the main ideas of the story as they read.

Summarizing I would begin this summary by saying that Ut is from Vietnam and she is at a new school in America. The other children aren’t very nice to Ut, especially a boy named Raymond. more

Summarizing Ut misses her mother who is still in Vietnam. When summarizing, always restate what the author has said you your own words. Summarize only the main ideas and perhaps a very important detail or two. Don’t retell the whole story. more

Summarizing Let’s continue reading, and as we do, remember to summarize what we are reading. Make sure you understand what you have just read. Let me now if you would like to share your summary with the group.

Choral Read Pgs. 37 and 38 Visualizing I can just imagine what Raymond’s face looked like when Ut said his name and offered him a piece of her cookie. more

Summarizing I can see the surprise and happiness in his face. He is glad that she is being kind to him. I think he will return the kindness. more

Summarizing I can see that both Ut and Raymond look happier and feel better now. Continue to form mental images of the characters and events in the story as we read. Choral read pages 39 and 40.

Summarizing Now that Raymond and Ut are beginning to be friendly to each other, this is a good time to summarize how their relationship has changed. Raymond was mean to Ut at first, but after they were sent to the principal’s office, their relationship changed. more

Summarizing Ut felt sorry for Raymond when he started to cry. She started talking to Raymond and even told him about her mother and Vietnam. Let me know if you would like to stop and make another summary. Choral read pages 41 to 43

Summarizing I’m glad that I stopped before to summarize. It helped me to understand what happened next. Now I will summarize the most important events that took place since the principal made Raymond and Ut talk to each other.

Summarizing Raymond wrote Ut’s story of her mother in Vietnam. Ut drew pictures to illustrate the story. After the principal read the story to the class, Raymond suggested having a fair to raise money to bring Ut’s mother from Vietnam. more

Summarizing In the end, Ut was reunited with her mother. Summarizing really helps me to order my thoughts and make sense of the information in the story.
