Passwords: What makes up a good password? Why have passwords? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v =COU5T-Wafa4

Privacy Policies to Applications – Have you clicked “accept” without reading the policy? Activity: On Snapchat or Instagram – see if you can locate the privacy policies that you’ve ALREADY agreed to. Debate – privacy policies – should they be written in more friendly language? How can they be improved to protect our privacy? How do the privacy policies PROTECT you? It is nearly impossible to remove your information once you’ve CHOSEN to make it public.

Consider 1. What types of personal information is important to keep safe/private online? What is appropriate to share? 2. How long does information stay online? Who could potentially see information online? Now? In the future? How can you protect your safety and information on this service? 3. How long has Chloe been online or checked her profile today? 4. What are your thoughts about the advertising found on Chloe's profile? Do you think it is appropriate for Chloe to be receiving adverts for dating services and weight loss products?

What are ways we can avoid sharing our personal information?

What is identity theft? Who would want to be me and why?

Unsecured Wireless Connection Where are they? Unsecured connection allows access to your passwords and all personal information on the device for anyone to see.

What kind of activities should be prohibited on unsecured connection? Online shopping Online banking Facebook? Email

3 rd party applications What are they? NOTE: They are not part of the big company! Protect yourself – Investigate the app before you accept it. What is more important to you? A free app or your privacy being compromised. They are apps that are designed to give big name platforms (google, amazon, pintrest, etc.) use on mobile devices.

Consider the GECDSB coming to your school and putting a tracking device on you the minute you walk into school. The board wants to track every movement – including the restroom, cafeteria, etc. IS THAT OKAY??? Why or why not?

Many of you already allow access… How does your device track your movement and what can you do about it? The media access control of your device (unique to every mobile device) does exactly what it is designed to do – it allows search of WIFI connection (even if it is secured) and tells the device (connected to MANY apps) exactly where you are. Note:You can SHUT tracking OFF!

When does your digital footprint start? * as soon as a photo or name is posted online it can be accessed by ANYONE connected to the internet. https://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=CE2Ru-jqyrY

Steps to managing your digital footprint 1. Type your “name” into your search engine. 2. Go through the list of links and review what is revealed about you, your family, your friends. 3. If there are active sites, create or change the passwords for them. 4. Read the privacy policies and take the time to look at the settings. 5. THINK about what you should and should not post. Consider accounts at school, email accounts, etc… delete them or update the privacy settings.

1. Birth date 2. Address 3. Phone number 4. The name of your school 5. Password information 6. Offensive, sexual messages or images Never Share

Privacy Matters If you share it “privately” online, it is private? Debate/discuss – Pair with one person next to you.

Let’s create an acronym for students coming into high school – our “feeder” schools that we could tweet/poster/etc. Consider: Do I want to make this information public? With whom do I want to share it? Am I okay with it being circulated to a larger audience?
