Rocks and Minerals Identification

I know a rock is sedimentary if: I see layers of sediment cemented together OR I see ripple marks OR It looks like it’s made from salt OR I see fossils OR I see cobbles, pebbles and sand grains cemented together

I know a rock is igneous if: I see randomly located interlocking crystals OR I see “bubbles” where gases escaped as lava cooled OR The texture of the rock is glassy because of rapid cooling OR I see very coarse grains (looks like a granite kitchen counter top) OR It’s shiny

I know a rock is metamorphic if: I see bands of light and dark minerals OR I see distorted/folded, foliated structure OR I see foliated “layers” of flaky minerals like mica OR I see a very hard, dense, usually solid colored boulder

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! There are sediments cemented together. SEDIMENTARY (BRECCIA)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has shiny minerals popping out. METAMORPHIC (SCHIST)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has coarse grains of different minerals. IGNEOUS (GRANITE)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has a glassy texture. IGNEOUS (OBSIDIAN OR BASALTIC GLASS)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! There are sea shells cemented together. SEDIMENTARY (LIMESTONE -COQUINA)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It is massive and it looks crystalline. METAMORPHIC (MARBLE)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has layers. It has a gritty feel. SEDIMENTARY (SANDSTONE)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has gas pockets. IGNEOUS (PUMICE)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It looks like salt. Crystals were formed from evaporites and precipitates. SEDIMENTARY (ROCK SALT)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It is very dense. It is foliated. METAMORPHIC (Slate)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It is lighter, less dense. You can see layers from compaction. SEDIMENTARY (BITUMINOUS COAL)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has coarse grains. IGNEOUS (DIORITE)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has gas pockets. IGNEOUS (SCORIA)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has fossils. SEDIMENTARY (SANDSTONE)

Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic??? How do you know?!?! It has banding. METAMORPHIC (GNEISS)
