Essential CCHS Computing Information Computer Applications September 2009

Backing Up Files Saving information on the school’s network is probably the safest method because ….  The school backs up its network drives daily  Unlike floppy disks and flash drives, a student can’t lose, misplace, or ruin the school’s network  If students keep their password private, the school’s network is also more secure than flash drives or floppy drives It is the student’s sole responsibility to be sure that all files are saved in at least 2 places.

Tips for Backing Up Files Organize your network account (or flash drive) by creating directories such as … Personal Files CCHS Course Files -computer apps (create folders within each course) -physical science -9 th grade lit -etc. Yearbook Files

 When working on extended projects, save EACH DAY’S work as a NEW/DIFFERENT file.  For example, reseachpaper1.doc, researchpaper2.doc, researchpaper3.doc, etc.  Keep all files until the end of the semester. Tips for Backing Up Files

Additional Ways to Backup Files  Backup files on a flash drive  Email files to yourself (as attachment)  Save printed copies of work  Use an online backup service, floppy drive, external hard drive, MP3 player, etc.

File formats Files created using one computer and/or application may not work/open on other computers/applications. The most common problems relate to Microsoft Office applications. At CCHS, we use Office 2003. If you have a new version (Office 2007) at home, you might run into problems unless you save the file as an older version (MS Word 2003.doc, for example). If you have an older version of MS Office at home (Office 97), your computer at home may not read a file created at school. If you use another program such as Microsoft works at home, you may not be able to read that file using Microsoft office.

File Formats Students often create files at home such as videos for chapel, electronic presentations for class, and documents in adobe Photoshop. Not all of these programs are available at school, so please confirm that you can work on these files at school.

CCHS and CCSA Sites  Links to school newsletters  Service hour forms  Media Center Page  Athletic events/schedules  Staff contacts/web pages  Course grades and assignments (coming soon)  Guidance office information

Media Center Web Page  TLC Schedule for study hall students  Electronic Periodical Databases for researching papers  Course book lists, projects, and additional information.  Teacher contact information  There is also a great deal of other information related to research available

CCHS Acceptable Use Policy Students using computers and the Internet at CCHS must follow the CCHS Acceptable Use Policy In general, this policy states that students must use the computers for both educational and CCHS related activities. CCHS Acceptable Use Policy (at the end of this document) CCHS Acceptable Use Policy (at the end of this document)

Computer Technology Guidelines  Keep passwords private; keep track of your user IDs and passwords (consider using a safe location online such as Yahoo notepad).  Because you may do something, doesn't make it legal.  Treat computers respectfully; don't try to fix computers on your own  Report problems with computers immediately

Final Warnings  Note that stealing information can result in criminal fines and prosecution just like stealing from a store or someone’s home  Posting information online can be both embarrassing and also result in CCHS sanctions as well as criminal prosecutions  Losing one’s computer privileges at CCHS can make life VERY difficult for students. Use computer technology responsibly.
