2 RULES REDUCE RISK! Individual activities have their own specific guidelines/rules regarding safety These guidelines cover personal and playing equipment and correct technique, as well as appropriate behaviour But we also need to consider risks/hazards which are particular to the places they are performed

3 Sports fields Long grass/uneven surface (appropriate footwear) Litter Dog faeces Broken bottles/drink cans Weather conditions/surface Insecure goals etc Unpadded rugby posts Protruding post sockets

4 Hard court areas Litter Broken/protruding fencing, sockets etc Buildings/ equipment close to run offs Insecure goals etc Ground conditions (weather)

5 Gymnasium Projecting or insecure wall bars, beams Poorly stored gym equipment Dirty/slippery floor Appropriate footwear Equipment safe and properly maintained

6 Sports hall Similar to gymnasium, but…. Be wary if more than one activity going on Windows in doors not obscured, doors self closing

7 Swimming pool Follow instructions Follow rules such as no running (wet slippery floor), jumping etc Be aware of depth Inform teacher of swimming capability Diving boards (aware of other swimmers) Appropriate clothing

8 Outdoor adventurous activities May be set in remote surroundings well away from school site Environments are often unfamiliar (and possibly harsh, exposed and potentially dangerous)
