2. © 2013 National Safety Council 2 New teen drivers are high risk! Injury from motor vehicle crashes is the #1 cause of death among teens in the U.S. New teen drivers age 16-17 are involved in about three times as many crashes as drivers aged 20 and older.

3. © 2013 National Safety Council 3 What is GDL? GDL allows new teen drivers to build experience in safer conditions. Gradually introduces teens to riskier driving environments over time. Has three stages of driver licenses. Includes limits on driving – young passengers, night driving, cell phones.

4. © 2013 National Safety Council 4 GDL Graduated Driver Licensing or GDL programs help to prevent injuries and deaths among teen drivers in motor vehicle crashes.

5. © 2013 National Safety Council 5 Research shows Studies show GDL systems reduced the crash risk of youngest drivers by about 20 – 40%. In general, crash reductions were greater in states with stronger GDL systems, as rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) scale.

6. © 2013 National Safety Council 6 Parents and Caregivers GDL laws are enforced primarily by parents. Parents provide supervised driving practice time with teens as they learn to drive. Parents are primary instructors and guardians of safety.
