1 Unit 3 – Information Systems
Aims By the end of this session you will be able to understand how data is transformed into Information Objectives Demonstrate how data is transformed into Information.

2 Transformation of Data into Information
Now you know the difference between data and information it is important that you understand how data is transformed into information.

3 Stages of Transformation
There are 5 different stages that data must go through to become information. Click on each one to find out more. 5. Presentation 3. Processing & Manipulation 2. Storage 1. Collection 4. Retrieval

4 1. Collection of Data Data can be collected physically using paper forms. Data can be collected Electronically through a computer. These could include: Application Forms, Registration Forms, Questioners, Interviews, Observations, Discussions, Online – WebPages.

5 2. Storage of Data Data needs to be organised so that it will be easy to retrieve. What are the advantages of storing data electronically? Data can be stored electronically (Video Tape, Cassette, Disks) or on paper (Archives, A4 Files). Remember, the protection of the data is just as important.

6 3. Processing and Manipulation of Data
The type of data and how it will be used determines how it is processed. Calculations can be done on data that contains some numbers. Data with numbers or text can be sorted, categorised or manipulated (I.e. databases).

4. Retrieval of Data After being processed and manipulated data must be retrieved. Database information can be retrieved using queries or filters. Keywords can be used to search information. List 4 websites that allows keyword searches. If data is moved then you should say where you got it from (attributed).
